Morning Discussion: The World of Tomorrow

Welcome to the future, Internet. Please collect your silver plastic jumpsuit, 2010 phrasebook and the keys to your hovercar on your way in.

Of course, picking a mere three video games from an entire year of upcoming releases is awfully difficult, as afterwards you remember all the other games you could have chose.

So here's to Natural Selection 2, APB, BioShock 2, Mass Effect 2, VVVVVV. AvP, Joe Danger, DeathSpank, Fez, Plain Sight, 'Raptor Safari 64,' Dead Space 2, Max Payne 3, Metro 2033, Just Cause 2, R.U.S.E., Mafia II, Dawn of War 2 - Chaos Rising, all those undated games which might potentially arrive, all I have forgotten, and all that have yet to be announced. What a fantastic year of video games it's shaping up to be.

It wouldn't be a new year without wallowing in our regrets and making a new year's resolution so we'll be digging deep to bring you our video game resolutions.

  • Since Doom 3 is part of one of the Steam Sales today, I thought I'd just throw this out there:

    The Dark Mod

Basically, a couple intrepid taffers decided to turn Doom 3 into the ultimate Thief mission delivery system. Everything is here from mantling to rope arrows to creepy zealot guards. Even the custom music is dead on for Thief. Content aside, this is Thief 4. Once the best Thief mission designers get comfortable with this, we're going to see some awesome campaigns (think T2X).

Q: What is The Dark Mod?

A: The Dark Mod is a total conversion mod for Doom 3, which recreates the moody stealth experience reminiscent of the 'Thief' games from Looking Glass Studios.

Q: So is it a game?

Technically, no. It's primarily a toolset, allowing fans to create their own missions in a medieval steampunk environment. When you download the mod, the only thing you can play immediately is the Training Mission. You have to download other missions separately (see our download page for more details).

Several missions have already been released for download, and more will be completed in the weeks following the release.

It's easy as hell to install and keep updated. They wrote their own download client so you just drop it into Games\Doom3\darkmod, run it, and walk away.

Of course, they have copyrights to worry about but they've done a good job of keeping it clean.
