Evening Reading: Putting the Oughts to Bed
by Garnett Lee, Dec 31, 2009 6:00pm PSTIf you'd told me last New Year's Eve that a year later I'd be writing the last Evening Reading of the decade on Shacknews I'd probably have looked at you dumbfounded. Sitting here doing it this evening I couldn't be more pleased with how things have worked out. Getting reacquainted with Shack has been great. We've got a great team, a great community, and fantastic support to carry us into 2010 and well beyond.
We've been posting our games to look forward to in 2010 today. I'll have mine coming tomorrow along with a collection of our resolutions for the New Year. Hope you'll take a moment to check them out and add to the conversation when time allows. Have a fun and safe New Year's Eve whatever your celebration plans.
I'll leave you with this great quote my friend Sterling tweeted earlier today: "The world isn't coming to an end. It's already tomorrow in Australia."

Wasn't trying to say anything about MWLL other than I think it's pretty awesome.
As far as what's missing, since you asked, imho primarily just interface, control, and GUI related things. Some are essentials but most are just polish.
The gameplay is great. Teamwork is tough right now without setting up voicecomms externally, and even then since the radar doesn't auto-alert when it detects a new enemy, and no C3 yet, etc.
When the Controls setup screen has all the correct options, that will be a huge step toward making the game more accessible and less frustrating to configure. A proper joystick configuration screen there will REALLY be a big help because that currently seems to be the biggest problem with control schemes.
Some sort of persistence stats on servers so players have a bank for their CBills so they don't lose everything when it crashes or when they leave or the server changes maps or reboots.
The interface text being all completed (weapon descriptions, the "Undefined" next to the target boxes, etc.) and the GUI is finished (ammo count displayed somewhere, radar options, C3, etc) that will all be icing on the cake.
A more modern engine like this should allow for much better Radar options than we had in the past. MWLL right now has less functionality there than even MW4 did, but that's understandable - it's just a beta. But as for where it should go? Well, not only should the Active Radar alert the player when it detects a new enemy in range, but there should be additional assignable modes (not just Active/Passive for 'mechs, but a separate set of functions that works for all radar regardless of vehicle type: like "If no enemies are currently on scope, and an enemy comes into detection range, automatically target it". And "Stay with whatever target is selected, such that if it goes out of range but comes back later, automatically retarget it". Things like that. "Smart" features like a 31st century C3 would definitely have and that a modern engine like Crytek would probably allow to happen. =)
