Morning Discussion

It truly is the most wonderful time of the year. Friends and family gather round, feasts are held three days in a row and there's enough half-melted refrozen snow slush for you to feel some kind of victory. Unless, of course, so much flu courses through your veins that even your sloshed uncle is more alert, stabler and a better conversationalist than you.

I ended up mostly playing King's Bounty: Armored Princess. It's fun. That's my review.

I've tried almost every potion, poultice, syrup, pill, powder, lozenge and tincture under the sun, all to no avail. Desperate times call for desperate measures and it'll be a cold day in Walthamstow before I let Kwanzaa be ruined too so if I'm not on the mend by tomorrow it'll be the ole Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap. Dilute! Dilute! O.K.!

Living Legends menz: any longer term impressions? I'd like to know how deep the gameplay is, how customizable weapon loadouts are, if there is localized damage etc

There is definitely localized damage. I've had my mech's arms blown off several times.

Does that prevent weapons on that arm from functioning? (I hope so)

No idea yet...Its still downloading (but in all honesty I did just get home 2 minutes ago and start the download).

      Looks cool as hell though.

There is certainly localized damage - I've shot out legs, weapon pods - its awesome. Also, sometimes a perfect shot might hit the core, and you'll see a bright white light emanating from the center of the mech, followed shortly by a mushroom cloud explosion!
(here's a mech about to go nuclear: http://pics.notforjeff.com/gallery.php?entry=Images/MechWarriorLL/ScreenShot0012.jpg)

There is plenty of depth. There are 12 mechs available to you with your starting credits, not to mention armored vehicles or battle armor weapons:

It's hard spending money on games right now since I will be dropping $120 for Bayonetta and Darksiders next week. Plus my monthly comic shipment, and Mass Effect later in the month so that is basically $250 on silly trivial things.

I don't know why a mod team would spend years creating a MechWarrior mod and even getting permission if they were simply going to make it another FPS which happens to star robots.

So what you're saying is that those of us expecting Mechwarrior 2's level of simulation are setting ourselves up for extreme dissapointment?

I really do hope that it's closer to MW2 in fidelity than, say, Mech Assault.

This has gone off the rails.

As far as I know, Living Legends is more simmy sim-sim mech stuff.

I was amused by how you seemed to be imagining they put in all that work and cleared it with Microsoft only to make another Shogo.

Wow, no one gets that this post is in response to Milleh's OP - worrying about lack of depth in gameplay, weapon customization, and localized damage, without these things it would be a glorified FPS. However, that is not the case. As I pointed out, there is an insane amount of mechs to choose from, and other vehicles! It is a mech simulation indeed!

now you've gone and confused everyone with your use of language.

To explain. She is saying "why would someone go to all the bother of getting the license and making the mod if they are not going to make it like the old Mechwarrior games - of course it's deep and has customisable weapon load outs".

6 hours in last night. Great mech/vehicle variety. I really want weapon customization. but in the short term... can you lower the view bob when marching around difficult terrain just a touch?!?

Thought the idea was that mechs have a STABLE weapons platform on top of agile legs... I can't aim if my reticule moves 10 degrees off after taking each step.

Missiles quickly became my goto weapon because they could lock on.

Um, sorry if I don't understand your post, but is the wide variety of mechs with different weapon systems not customization?

    • reply
      December 28, 2009 9:04 AM

Right now we have different variants for each thing you buy, so you do get to customize to a point. We plan for full customization via some sort of MechLab in the future though. Problem with that, is it makes the game much harder to balance. Other than that there are a ton of touches like localized damage, weapon explosions, movement impairment, and overall a huge selection of different types of loadouts from short range to long range. You can go out in a battle suit, tank, mech, VTOL, or aerospace, so you have quite a bit of choice on how you want to play.

      TAG and NARC
      How do I use?

I love the LRMs but I dont know what the TAG icon looks like.
I don't know which radar blip is being TAG'd.
Do I have to switch targets ('T') to the correct radar blip?

What is NARC? (I heard its something similar)

What are the Nukes? how do you get one? how do you use one?

nuke happens with a core breach - don't think there are mechs running around with them.

if it works like in the MW games, once someone on your team fires a NARC that attaches to an enemy mech, you can basically blindfire your LRMs within a 90 degree range of the NARC'd mech and they will home in on the NARC beacon automatically.
