Evening Reading: Feats of Gaming

by Garnett Lee, Dec 23, 2009 5:00pm PST

Another holiday season has flashed before my eyes. This happens every year. My internal calendar gets thrown off by the offset between the video game industry run up to the season and the normal cycle. The early rush to get games out, an effect heightened this year by everyone wanting to get out of Modern Warfare's way, comes well before the "spirit" of the season kicks in.

Chris and I were chatting about great "Christmas" games. He remembered back to when Final Fantasy 10 came out here in the States right before Christmas 2001. For me, Nintendo -- and Zelda in particular -- spring to mind. It might not fit the modern model that banks on strong initial sales to setup both the buzz and reorders to carry them to greater heights during the holiday sales period but there was something to be said for a big title that came out right around Thanksgiving. It made the anticipation for getting it as a gift that much stronger. There are plenty more to remember that I'll let you share.

Whatever you celebrate, here's to enjoying some great games over the winter break. There were plenty of them this year, at times more than anyone could get to. Tomorrow afternoon we'll be sharing some of our favorites that might have gotten away from you. After that it'll be a little quiet. We'll of course have a new chatty thread for Christmas, though, and Chris has a thing or two planned for Saturday. I'm off for a brief stint until next Tue so from me, Happy Holidays.

Here's your Festivus hors d'oeuvres:

Racing fans, it's worth suffering through the music to see this video of Walter Rohrl tearing it up from the heyday of Group B

Restaurants are now using menu psychology on us.

And since Alice kicked it off I think it fitting to close the day on this Festivus montage.
