Evening Reading: Synergy
by Shack Staff, Dec 17, 2009 5:00pm PSTIn what may very well be the first Evening Reading of its kind, tonight's chatty stemmed out of a collaboration between two authors. Can you figure out who did what?

I don't see a lot of review threads yet so I thought I'd post my impressions as I just got back from Avatar.
Honestly I should probably wait a bit as i'm still all hyped up and will probably be embarassed at my gushing tomorrow, but I will say this:
It is unequivocably the most gorgeous movie I have ever seen put to film. Er, bits. If you are on the fence about whether to see this movie in 3D or not, I cannot express what a mistake you would be making by missing this movie in 3D.
This is a three dimensional film. You really can't see it in 2D. You would be seeing a worse distillation of a film's vision than a third generation Pan & Scan VHS copy of a traditional 16:9 film. I was a skeptic. I thought the 3D could easily be a gimmick that would fall flat, and the 3D trailers kinda gave me that sinking feeling like watching the first ten minutes of The Phantom Menace did. "Oh no, this is going to suck."
It is not a gimmick. You have not seen anything like it.It is not just a film but a visual masterpiece in three dimensions. Yes, it is basically a realization of every Yes album cover, but holy hell is it beautiful. I experienced vertigo looking down from great heights, i caught myself lifting my hand to brush leaves from my face, I felt a complete rush of exhiliration from flying.
I can't remember the last time i've smiled at a movie screen with a childlike grin so long my mouth started to hurt.
No real spoilers, but those who would prefer not to hear anything negative yet might not want to click:
The plot brings few surprises and the moral distinctions are painted broad and stereotypically. Evil is cigar-chomping, profit-counting evil and good is nobile, spiritually pure. But I didn't really give a damn, it works well enough even if I might have desired a bit more subtlety. Cameron has never been much for moral ambiguity. If you weren't disappointed by his other works, you'll like it just fine. This isn't a movie you go see for the plot and it will not win any Academy Awards for its screenplay, but what it *is* is a three hour vacation on another fucking planet.
TLDR; holy fucking shit. Go see it in 3D. Fuck.
