  • Mapping ain't easy (yet).

One day we'll balk at present day CAD design just as we now laugh at the old fashioned paper, pencil, and ruler drafting board. Imagine how much easier it would be to design maps/models/products/whatever if the interface was much more natural, modifications more intuitive, even tactile, and you had instant development feedback.

Mainstream VR immersion will go a long way towards that goal... not to say that orthogonal views will ever go away. But, I mean, what's easier than being able to "fly" up to some walkway, grab an object in your virtual hands, rotate it 30 degrees, stretch it 5 units, merge it with smaller object #2, and say, "apply [this] texture here", touch the face, "apply [this] there," touch another face, then snap it back on the wall and say, "do the same for all the others which were automatically grouped in this room." Then you'd walk down a hallway and notice a misaligned texture... so you indicate texture move and drag it. Next, you notice the ceiling is a little low, so you push it up, and the corresponding intersections behave smartly. Now you want to get the lighting juuuust right... so you play with it, dynamically.

None of this stuff can replace architectural or artistic talent though... but at least it would make it easier than a mouse, a keyboard, and a 2D viewport. :)

(Damn... I didn't mean to rant on like some righteous futurist nut or anything...)
