Games for Windows Live 'Games on Demand' Launches With 50% off Shadowrun, Viva Pinata

Microsoft's foray into PC digital games distribution has begun in earnest today with the launch of Games for Windows Live Games on Demand, offering a small selection of titles at prices roughly comparable to competing digital distributors.

Requiring an update to version 3.2 of the Games for Windows Live client, Games on Demand sells digital downloads of GFW titles by credit card or with Microsoft Points.

Launch titles DiRT 2 and Fallout 3.

A free version of Tinker--a puzzler previously released for Windows Vista Ultimate--and 50% discounts on Shadowrun and Viva Pinata are on hand to celebrate the launch.

The launch titles and their US and UK prices follow below. The previously-announced GFWL-enabled versions of Osmos and World and Goo are absent from the lineup, while Kane & Lynch curiously can only be bought with Microsoft Points.

The in-game GFWL client is acceptable, but the desktop client is still as useless as ever. I wish the five-man team of paint huffers they keep locked in a basement at Redmond would spend development time and money on creating a proper desktop client instead of integrating a sub-par, overpriced digital distribution platform.

The PC division over there is obviously clueless.

I just scored both Section 8 and Resident Evil 5, both for the PC for $12.99 a pop from Target's Clearance Rack, why would they sell RE5 for full price when the game is dirt cheap in retail stores?

GFWL is garbage. It's slow, awkard, and unnecessary. Buying anything through it's store is an absurd process of wading through a very poorly designed nightmare of microsoft "disney dollar" points and slow web pages. The most frustrating part is that it actually could have been good if it wasn't trying so hard to turn my PC into an XBox. MS needs to take some notes from Steam.

Seeing that it tanked horribly at retail, MS should make Shadowrun a free release. At the very least they should do a few "free weekend" trials and reduce the price to 5 bucks. Taken on its own minus the controversy surrounding the games name, its probably one of the deepest and well balanced multiplayer only games ever made.

Am I missing something on this? I installed the client thinking I could see my XBox friends while on my computer, or vice versa, but the only way I seem to be able to see my friends, or start chats is in an actual game. They tout this as a social tool that allows you to connect to people, but you can only do that if you play a game on it? I expected something like a chat program, or the Steam friends list...

For any interested UK buyers Shadowrun is actually priced at 800msp when using Microsoft Points. Which is Â£6.80 as opposed to the credit card price of Â£7.50. Not a huge difference but neat nevertheless if your a 360 owner with some spare points in your account. The price of an XBLA game for Shadowrun isn't that bad of a price at all.

Not to Microsoft: You actually have competition on the pc, remember? You can charge these kind of prices on your console and get away with it but not here.

Everytime Games For Windows Live gets updated you just have to laugh. It's been out for a while now and is still a laughing stock. If Microsoft isn't going to take it seriously what was the point of even launching the damn thing?

You know, I really like the GFWL software itself. I love being able to have my 360 Live friend's list on the PC with messaging etc. But seriously...these prices are atrocious. What ever happened to being competitive in the slightest, I mean MS you're competing directly with Steam and D2D for example, yet price higher than them!

Only thing I may get is Shadowrun as it's playable with 360 gamers and Â£7.50 isnt bad. This would make my 4th or so re-purchase of the game though, man I love it :P
