TIME Names Top 10 Video Games of 2009
by Jeff Mattas, Dec 10, 2009 6:30pm PSTTIME Magazine has released its top 10 video game picks of 2009, tossed in amidst a slew of 50 different lists chronicling the year's highs and lows. It usually makes for interesting reading to see how those outside the industry view the past year's crop of games, though some head-scratching and disagreement are all but guaranteed.
Games that appeared on multiple platforms comprise half of the list but five platform-exclusives make the list as well, including Geo-Defense Swarm for the iPhone.
Modern Warfare 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and DJ Hero claim the top three spots, followed by Borderlands, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Geo-Defense Swarm. Scribblenauts, Halo 3: ODST, Assassin's Creed 2, and Uncharted 2 round out the list.
The brief blurbs describing each selected game will likely leave hardcore gamers wanting, while simultaneously entertaining with some unintentionally humorous bits. The assertion that Modern Warfare 2 shows that video games "have something intelligent to say about contemporary military conflicts," made me chuckle, as did the reference to Borderlands' "wickedly clever writing."

There will never be another Joker on screen?
The game follows The Dark Knight's storyline? If so, it certainly wasn't sold as such and has some contradictions with it.
"Gotham's savior finds himself trapped?" He wasn't trapped, he had a fucking hover jet available at all times. Batman doesn't get trapped, period. In fact, he probably planted the idea of taking Arkham over in Jokers head a year ago, just to make sure he didn't get bored from handing out roundhouse kicks to muggers and crusty old ladies who jaywalk. Besides, there's too many airducts in that place. If you have a wrench and more muscle than a 12 year old girl, you can't get trapped.
"With compelling story lines?" The only compelling story lines were those already written (ie. the flashback to Bruce as a kid). The Joker knocking some guards out and saying "come get me" to Batman isn't compelling.

Nevertheless, seeing MW2 on the top list of everything to do with video gaming won't surprise me at all. So many good games this year, all overshadowed by a military game :(.

MW2 wasn't even the best game that came out that *week*, much less all year.

Also, is Borderlands really worthy to be on that list?

In my opinion its a good game but not a great game that people keep saying that its GOTY the single player is just all over the place and just doesn't do well with the pacing and the MP just isn't as fun as left4dead2.
Red faction guerilla is still my GOTY but l4d2 is starting to creep up on it more and more.

But it is not an innovative game. It is MW's MP with a lot of new features to support the RPG-style of progression, but it is still the same FPS.
Same with Halo OSDT. (Even more so as it feels very unHaloish to me, and less of a great title). Everything else on that list, I can agree (though UC2 is way too low, IMO)

And Batman.
