Evening Reading: Boxed In
by Garnett Lee, Dec 01, 2009 6:36pm PSTThis Evening Reading is a compromise. This afternoon I received a press release from Square Enix touting the box art you see here for Final Fantasy 13. Doing story posts for screenshots already gets me wondering whether we're covering a game or outright promoting it but box art? That's clearly just marketing the game, right? As I thought about it some more I also accepted that whatever category it fell under as a fan I'd want to see it -- and that makes it something we should post.
And screens? Well I know I always want to see them too on any game I'm interested in. At 1UP we had modules to throw this sort of thing up on the site but that gets lost too easily and really the fun of screens is in commenting and speculating on what you see there. As we work on improving Shack one of the goals will be to find a presentation method that doesn't treat these things as "news" but does give us a place to talk about the latest.
In the meantime you have plenty to check out from today's feed:

Great:
Parts of the story, it was engaging throughout and very well thought through. All of the characters were at least well written and the overall story arch was satisfying right up to the end.
The difficulty, just imagine a game in 2009 that remembered how to be difficult! Actually dying, and having penalties for it. Having to retry sections several times because you messed up. This stands along side Demon Souls as an example of how much fun a game can be when it's hard.
Decisions, they were often hard and really made you think, eschewing the standard saint/asshole choices for something with a lot more thought. However there are several copouts where, if you get through the dialogue right, everyone ends up happy with rainbows and ect. Still, the best seen in a game yet.
Good:
The combat, a truly tactical rpg hasn't been seen in quite a while and this is a very good example of one. Never the less suspect AI that doesn't seem to notice it's allies being attacked one room over, as well as some rather annoying automated party AI drag it down. But the thing that really keeps this from being great is the sheer fact that Rogue and Warrior classes are just plain dreadfully boring compared to mages.
The characters, imagine that, characters with their own motivations for doing things! Every other game in history automatically assumes that they're pretty much your mindless slaves there to do your bidding. If you're lucky perhaps they talked with each other once in a while, or even went away if they really didn't like. Again there were big problems though, chief among them was that except the dog and perhaps the golem none of them were very likable. What were no doubt intended to be flaws ended up as overblown thickheadedness and a tendency to hate you character, occasionally for doing something they'd approve of in principle anyway.
The bad:
Controls, I most of the people who've played this game to completion (on the pc) will forever have a twitch whenever they hear that "chkchk" sound.
The setting, oh joy Elves that live in the woods and Dwarves that live underground and hey the mages live in a big fucking tower. Next your going to tell me there's a midget with a ring and an urgent quest.
Game balance ahooooy! For much of the game enemies are completely leveled in respect to you, making so you don't really feel that much more powerful until the end. At the same time you'll encounter bosses that are either way to easy or nigh impossible to beat. And finally there's a spell that might as well be called "Cone of I fucking win" as it managed to beat the final boss you encounter without so much as a hiccup. It never keeps the game from being fun, but damn is it bad.

Officially add 2009 to the history books as the year that games finally overtook Hollywood in terms of what's possible when it comes to pure entertainment.
Assassin's Creed II, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Batman: Arkham Asylum, DiRT 2, Risen. Feel free to add to the list.
We've reached a point where game developers can take a concept and so completely visualize it that the resulting game is so immersive that it feels like you're really in this world they've created, no matter how long you play.

My first foray, I want to love it but...what the fuck is going on? The learning curve is basically a 90 degree angle.

A few days ago I was playing on one of the Dallas L4D2 servers during the Dead Center finale when suddenly Jimmy Fucking Gibbs dropped down onto the stair with me and started biting my face! Derge and I shot him to death!
Degenerate and Arcanum were conveniently incapped on the 3rd floor so they will deny this all happened, but I saw it. Jimmy bit my face. He also leaves a mud-man effect on the screen for some reason when he hits you. And he takes a lot more damage than a regular common, maybe as much as a Charger.
So not only is he in the game model files, but he randomly appears in the game. Unless someone was at the console spawning him to fuck with us, he actually does appear at random in the game sometimes. I love L4D2!

Therefore I need to listen to what I say on the mic of my laptop without recording anything (I don't want to deal with a large file after several hours of listening to my own voice).
For example, I heard a lot of praise about Camstudio2 but I am not sure if that feature is available.

The first is an AWESOME article detailing the depth of Ubisoft's research and the historical accuracy of the original Assassin's Creed.

The second article is about how Assassin's Creed II is a further example of the fact that mainstream video games can be learning tools when the developers put forth the effort to make them so.

I got a memo back from a notoriously difficult to work with partner. He said good job, but the paper is literally covered in red ink]i. The corrections are like he used the memo to clean up after an honor killing (most likely mine).
What exactly is one supposed to learn from a good job being a correction-fest? That there is no chance of doing it correctly, so a best effort is a good job?

In my case, I have a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R with dual RealTek nic's that have started getting very flaky (system will sleep and then the network parts never wake up it seems). Been frustrating in the extreme.
Any similar experiences and what did you do to fix it?

Mark Zuckerberg Writes:
The plan we've come up with is to remove regional networks completely and create a simpler model for privacy control where you can set content to be available to only your friends, friends of your friends, or everyone.
Good luck with all that.

Has anyone tried out Recover Keys before? I'm looking to scan and pull key info for about 30 windows machines. The software looks good, but I have not seen many reviews for it.
(I'm scanning because it is hopefully quicker than typing out the keys from all of our laptop shipments)
