Left 4 Dead 2 Sells Over 2 Million Copies at Retail; Downloadable Content News 'Very Soon'
by Chris Faylor, Dec 01, 2009 7:40am PSTValve's multiplayer-centric zombie shooter Left 4 Dead 2 has sold "over 2 million retail copies" worldwide since it released on November 17, the developer said today.
"[Left 4 Dead 2] appears to be on target to become one of the top selling Xbox [360] and PC titles for the month of November," reads an announcement sent out by Valve. As the above figure only details sales of physical retail copies, the numbers do not include copies of the game sold through Valve's PC digital distribution platform Steam.
The company added that "sales to date are more than double the original [Left 4 Dead]" and that L4D2 has "already been played by over 1 million Xbox LIVE Gold account holders," with word that "news regarding L4D2 DLC 1 is coming very soon."

I'm a huge Valve fanboy, but this is the first Valve title that I've not bought. I just can't get over the fact that I paid good money for the first game, only to see it so poorly supported (by Valve's extremely high standards.)
I'll wait and pick this one up during a half-price weekend, at the price that it should have been for what is basically a standalone expansion pack.

I'd be willing to bet more than 90% of PC players bought it through Steam and not at retail. I bought it on 360 personally so. Though I'll no doubt end up getting it on PC when it's cheap to play with friends. I just don't think many PC players actaully went to retail stores for a Valve game.
I just havent had any fun playing it.

Since it all started I've been a pretty staunch supporter of DLC but in all fairness it's getting beyond a joke now.
Games are released, full games to be sure, but it seems EVERY game coming out is followed by promises of DLC and extra features and all that shit. I miss the says when the word "Expansion" meant something. It wasn't just a extra hour of tacked on content, it was actually a worth followup for half the price.
Every game is in effect becoming a subscription game.
I hear the cries of the people who say "Oh but you don't have to buy it!" and while that is true, if I don't will I ever see an actual expansion? I doubt it.
DLC should be free. Full stop. If a company plans on supporting a game with DLC that they're going to charge for then the actual game should come at a knockdown price.
Even if DLC offered more, if it could be justifed, but the vast majority just can't.
I'm a Bioware fanboi, confessed, and I bought the Warden's Keep DLC for DA:O. It took me about 20 minutes. That's 20 minutes for £5, I get more entertainment value that that from a cinema ticket. It's a fucking joke.
In conclusion, if you release DLC thats paper thin, don't charge for it. If, like say Broken Steel for FO3, it's meaty enough, then you can charge.

It is especially annoying coming from companies like Valve, where it basically means "some day eventually we're going to tell you something probably" with no particularly meaningful information about the time frame.
