A new Prince of Persia video game will be released in May 2010, the same month the feature film based off the franchise hits theaters, publisher Ubisoft revealed today.

Dubbed "Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands," the title is in development for "consoles and handhelds," and is said to mark a return to the "Sands of Time storyline" that inspired the upcoming film. The company added that the new game will pack "many of the fan-favorite elements from the original series as well as new gameplay innovations."

Ubisoft had previously hinted at a possible movie tie-in, with series creator and film co-writer Jordan Mechner recently trademarking "The Forgotten Sands."

More information, including the first trailer, is slated to arrive during the Spike TV 2009 Video Game Awards, which air on Saturday, December 12 at 8 PM EST.
