Duke Nukem 'D-Day' Teased with Screenshot
by Alice O'Connor and Chris Faylor, Nov 30, 2009 1:43pm PSTDuke Nukem's official Facebook page has been updated with a screenshot for something called "D-Day," with the action hero himself teasing that he "doesn't stay down for long."
It remains to be seen exactly what D-Day is, whether it be a a new game, the build-up to an announcement or revelation, or something else entirely. The stadium and enemy might seem familiar from the Duke Nukem Forever footage leaked in May, though those were callbacks to Duke's earlier adventures.
Series creator and Duke Nukem Forever developer 3D Realms closed its offices and laid off a majority of staff earlier this year, though the company affirms it is still working on the legally-troubled shooter. Borderlands and Brothers in Arms veteran Gearbox was working on a separate game dubbed 'Duke Begins,' though that project is said to have been postponed. And recently, rumors have surfaced of Sunstorm Interactive's 2002 side-scroller Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project coming to Xbox Live Arcade.
Meanwhile, a new trilogy of portable Duke Nukem titles is in the works at Frontline Studios. The first, Critical Mass, was expected this fall but, in true Duke tradition, seems to have slipped into 2010.

But back when the "marketing stunt!" thing was a daily thread, I posted this and I'm going to repost it now:
I'm going to say the unpopular thing here.
A PR stunt of this magnitude - faking like the company is closed, asking every single employee to lie and act like they're looking for work, giving little goodbyes - would only work for something with intense mainstream popularity.
Like back when King of the Hill was popular and they said the series would move to California from Texas. That was a PR stunt to announce the new timeslot.
I hate to break this to everyone but - Duke Nukem Forever was not mainstream. The average person has scarcely even heard of Duke Nukem. If they have it's been years and years since they've seen him in a game. If they've heard of him at all.
Here on the Shack we see DNF as the greatest game we'll never play. People have said "TAKE TWO IS CRAZY! THEY SHOULD HAVE GIVEN 3DR ALL THE MONEY THEY NEEDED!! DNF WILL SELL ELEVENTY BILLION COPIES AND MAKE TONS OF MONEY HATS!!!"
No, Duke Nukem Forever would be a blip to most people. Hell, the "Forever" moniker went out of fashion in the 90's. Most people outside of our circle here have never even heard of DOOM or Quake, except for in the sentence "...were found in the rooms of the Columbine shooters"
They've heard of Halo and The Sims and they have some friends that play WoW. They have no idea what a Duke Nukem is. So the only people who would be impressed by this PR stunt are us and we don't need it.
3DR went under because they flat ran out of money and also ran out of people willing to foot the bill for a game that's seen more reboots than a Windows 95 machine on a hot day.
Will DNF ever be finished or released? Hard to say. But this isn't a PR stunt.
