Weekend Discussion: Holiday Edition
by Chris Faylor, Nov 28, 2009 7:54am PSTAfter two days of festive hustle and bustle here in the good old United States of America, it may feel like the weekend is already over. Fortunately, it's just begun, offering up another two days of relaxation, food comas, mid-day naps and familial avoidance.
And to those in Europe and Australia and all the other places where the weekend is roughly half-way over as of this writing, hopefully you've made the best of it thus far. Maybe we can play some Left 4 Dead 2 later? That nut still haunts me. Mustachio!

So I looked for those kitchenaid Pro Line grinders people recommended, Amazon has them for $150 bucks, I figured with exchange rate and aussie import rape added, it would come to around $200.
Nope, it appears they aren't even available in Australia, just the old ass 2004 model for $315.
Fuckers.

Has anyone tried going solo?
I'm thinking of that for my next run. Solo Evil Bastard.

this is something i spend far too much time trying to grab.
do you replay old titles? i've found it can often ruin the memories. playing a 1985 game 20 years later can really sour your pristine memory of the experience.
do you reminisce on the shack? we all do to an extent, but it's hollow without the game backing it up.
do you just move on and realize nostalgia is like chasing a fleeting ghost that doesn't even exist, because time changes all past memories?
i wish i could reclaim some of the feelings i got playing zelda for the first time or duke nukem 3d or discovering shareware but it's probably more productive to move forward and create new memories - although my eye is always growing more critical and more cynical, which is sad.

I have a pet project that slows down dramatically when a certain number of textures are selected and rendered. Around the 13th texture. No matter the pixel size, the newest ATI drivers suddenly slowdown (a hundred fold) once you bind the 13th texture to the texture unit. At least, on my test machine which has an integrated ATI graphics chip. My Geforce 8500 rocks on with no issues. The integrated ATI chip did fine before I upgraded to the latest driver version.

I didn't buy anything in the last lot, which both makes me happy and sad. Hopefully they've saved the best til last and they're not scraping the bottom of the barrel.

- People who get onto the people movers at airports and just stop. The point of them is to move you *faster* than walking alone - it's not for you to have a rest!
- People whose personal hygiene is questionable. Please, take a shower/bath and don't smoke six packs of cigarettes before you get on the plane. You smell terrible and it's painful sitting next to you. Also, any chance you don't need two beer during a 30 minute flight?
- Obese people who get annoyed at you for putting the armrest down. I'm sorry, I'm healthy and don't weigh eleventy-billion pounds. The fact that you're uncomfortable because the arm rest prevents you from spilling into two-thirds of my seat is not my problem. Next time, ask the agent nicely to have a row to yourself, buy a second ticket, or lose weight. Either way, your obesity should not result in me having to be in physical contact with you for multiple hours when I fit in my seat just fine.
- People who don't have the physical strength to lift their carry-on into the overhead compartment. I have no problem with people taking carry-ons, but I've observed at least one person get hit in the head with someone else's carry-on and three other near-misses just in the last couple of weeks. If you're not strong enough to lift your bag, maybe you should check it instead of having to subject everyone else from dodging your wheeled death-crate!
- People who get up and move to the front of the plane so they can beat others to the exits. I have observed this consistently on flights from Asia, so maybe it's a cultural thing, I'm not sure. The plane was taxiing in and had paused before the ground crew arrived - a large number of passengers just got up and started heading for the exits. This is dangerous for all concerned and you're not gaining anything by moving around while the plane is still moving.
- People who are loud and cranky with the agents. No one cares that you're a Gold/Platinum/Elite/SuperElite/ traveller. Be polite and maybe the agent will help you solve your problem. And remember, if you were really important, you'd have a private jet flying you places instead of flying coach and angling for the business class upgrade.
What are your travelling pet peeves?

I'm only about 48 minutes through this episode, and oh my god the Globetrotters made the dumbest decision in the history of the race.
Obviously heavy spoilers since it hasn't aired on the west coast yet.

Using Excel:
Find the value of t-distribution for 12 degrees of freedom at 5% level of significance (1 sided test) using the TINV function.
I assume it would be =TINV(.05,12) but that gives me 2.17 when I should be getting 1.782 for the probablity. Seems simple and straightforward, any suggestions?

I'm thinking it might be a good co-op game for my friends and I. It sounds pretty cool from what I've read, but on the other hand it's still full price on Steam so I'd like to make sure we'll actually like it. To me, an action RPG in an open world sounds perfect though I do expect the game has problems too. (I've read a couple reviews)

So is Wynne a must have?
Right now my party is Morrigan (whom I've got a relationship w/ already. we made out.), Alistair, Lelianna (archery setup), myself (rogue assassin dual wield).
Do I need to take Wynne tho and ditch Lelianna to ensure I have enough healing going on in late game? Or will i be able to get by wit potions and and Morrigan's Herbalism? I'm worried I'll reach battles where potion healing just won't do?
Also - WHAT THE FUCK IS THE CODEX? Am I supposed to read this bullshit? What is the point of CODEX in this game? I always see shit like CODEX UPDATED :)

I currently have a plain adsl line and am using the us robotics 9108 (adsl 2+) modem.
Today my signal will be switched to vdsl2 and i received a sagem F@ST 3464 modem but reports on the routing function of that modem are quite bad.
I'm trying to configure both devices in bridge and let the usr do as much work as possible.
Is the usr capable of doing everything (PPPOE, DHCP, Routing) and just let the sagem read the vdsl2 signal?
Also, it's not really working so i'd like some advice from someone who has already put a user modem in bridge.

I've recently replaced Tweetie 2.1 with TwitBird. Super clean and feature-rich interface. I recommend you download it and give it a try.
