Morning Discussion
by Alice O'Connor, Nov 25, 2009 6:00am PSTI am swimming in open-world games. This morning I entered the second act of Far Cry 2, last night I fired up Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition, and Grand Theft Auto IV arrived a few moments ago. Technically I could probably have played all these on my old PC but I find these sorts of open-world games only truly come alive when you can crank the draw distance and drink in the atmosphere as the developers intended it to be.
I'll happily play a linear shooter on settings so low it makes Quake look good but an open world is an experience worth savouring. So far, I am very glad indeed that I waited to play all these, even if I did miss out on the super fun Shacknews chatty discussions.

Hello Shack. Earlier this year I decided I wanted to try and make my own arcade stick. The project hasn't been a high priority, so progress has been pretty glacial. I made some decent progress towards the end of summer though. My initial ideas were posted here: http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=19275762#itemanchor_19275762
I've since changed the housing dimensions to 16x9x2" and reduced the fastener count. Here's a shot of the CAD model before the screw holes were modeled in: http://www.shackpics.com/viewer.x?file=arcade_stick_v3_c3870evli43dnbfooihi.jpg
One of the machinists at work was gracious enough to spend his Saturday mornings teaching me how to use a vertical mill. Here's a bunch of pics from that:

Now I need to do all the internal wiring. I also need to decide how I want to finish the metal surfaces. DIY anodizing sounds like a neat experiment to try, especially if I can find a way to borrow the constant current power supplies that are needed.

Robert Ashley helps people in videogames instead of helping people in real life, meets a comedy group who spend hundreds of hours every year playing the most boring videogame ever created, talks to a guy who quit playing games for a year, and profiles the best selling pinball designer of all time.

I can't recommend this "podcast" any higher.

A new Kindle software update is now available and will be automatically delivered to your Kindle. We are constantly working on improving the Kindle user experience and have included the following features in this update:
Built-in PDF Reader: Your Kindle can now display PDF documents natively. Native PDF support allows you to carry and read all of your personal and professional documents on the go.
Adjustable Screen Rotation: The Kindle screen can now manually rotate between portrait and landscape views.
Good, there's no reason why any of the Kindle DX features outside of hardware like the orientation sensor (duh) shouldn't also be in the Kindle 2.
