by Garnett Lee, Nov 24, 2009 6:47pm PSTTuesday of Thanksgiving week so we're all about ready to tune out and go into holiday mode. Due to travel I won't be catching up too much on the big games. I do have my PSP to fall back on, though, where I'm addicted to PixelJunk Monsters. It surprised me that a game I found such a good home game translated that well to the smaller format. In general I find portable gaming tough to sort out. On the one hand I dig that we get these large scale productions but on the other I've learned that I don't ever play them. The times when I can settle in to play that sort of game are also when I'm at home, and then I'll kick on the home systems that are better suited to high fidelity play. I've always wondered whether there's a way to make a game work with a broad overarching path that breaks down into easily consumed chunks for playing on the go.
While that may take some time to answer, we can give you the condensed version of today's best stories:

But for the past 9 years there's been a sad, sad dearth of good RTS games. Ok, I bought Company of Heroes, but I got two missions into the singleplayer and quite because it was some kind of tactics crap and while I loved the multiplayer it was eventually just filled with jerks and the strategy was figured out so much that once again tactics just plain took over the gameplay.
Someone please assure me that SupCom2 and Starcraft 2 will be good : (
I want to love RTS's again, and while I'll be buying SC2 for the singleplayer I want a game that will be more about strategy and not bullshit micromanaging tactics. (P.S. Empire TW SUCKS.)

It really fucking sucks that all of the budget cuts have made my education longer, most of the classes I need are only offered once a sem, and they pile them on in the fall or spring semester... so I'll have all the transfer requirements done after the Fall 2010 semester, and then what... sit on my hands for the spring 2011 semester? :( This is why I hope they accept mid-year transfers :(

Then he asked me a a question that just fell flat. "Why can't you come snowboard with me?" I don't know why can't I? Maybe Dahanese knows. Amped 3 has no 2 player co-op. Amped 2 did. Unfortunately, I assumed it was not backwards compatible. I don't know how long ago it was added but it looks like some virtual shredding will be done.

Missions currently available:
1 - Fly a shitty plane through a bunch of shitty checkpoints. Worse than Superman 64.
2 - Race a shitty boat through a bunch of shitty checkpoints. Worse than flying the plane.
3 - Drive around in an ice cream truck and try to sell 50 units of drugs without getting busted by the cops. Not applicable because the mission doesn't fucking work 99% of the time.
The first half of this game was so damn great, but this shit right now is worse than The Getaway. Yea, I fucking went there.

My wife has been dabbling in Javascript as a first programming language. She seems to like it enough and seems to get the major concepts. I'd like to get her started on a language that would allow DB access. I'm a Java developer and I'm just not feeling like java is the right choice for her. The frameworks are just too much of a hand full i think. So i was thinking of maybe suggesting PHP or Grails.
What's the easiest to use language to give a total noob the ability to write dynamic web content?

My next loan payment is 11th January but I have rent and bills overdue. I know these payday loan companies have a less than ideal reputation though....and most require you actually be in full time employment anyway.
I'm kinda desperate though, i'm not sure what to do. Family is out of the question.
I have a friend that I know for a fact would lend me what I need without hesitation, but I don't really want to ask him. He has done so before (I payed him back a week later) so I don't really want to have to go there again, it's not fair on him.

Looking to pick up my girlfriend a new TV for her apartment for Xmas and was wondering what people have researched to be the best deal going around this year. For the record she doesn't need anything massive or even in 1080p as she honestly won't notice. I just need to get the fuck rid of her 17 inch tube that takes up half of the room.
So maybe a 720p 26-27 incher would be ideal. Though any recommendations that fall in the same price range are certainly ok.

Spoiler-tagged because my account is pretty detailed.
In the chapter, "Path of Light" when Drake is forced to complete the puzzle based on the light mirrors and the gigantic three-bladed structure, there comes a point where Drake almost falls when one of the blade shatters and must then use his handgun to break the cover from a stone eyeball on the adjacent structure. During normal gameplay, Drake would have both a pistol and rifle on him, but if the player is using the game's built-in store system and has activated a rifle the player will only have the rifle equipped (the store system does not allow for giving two weapon types). After almost falling, Drake then cannot shoot the cover from the stone eyeball (he has no pistol in this situation!) Furthermore, the game autosaves right after the scene showing the blade breaking which means you can't reload from the last checkpoint or manually load either because it will start you in the same place with the same weapon. Drake also cannot move from his position or fall from it.
This essentially ends the game prematurely. :(

- When someone hands you pills, whatever you were doing is interrupted and your weapon replaced with the pill bottle. Very annoying.
- Sometimes Chargers hit you up against map geometry and you get stuck. The only solution you have is to hope a Jockey comes by and frees you.
- There are often 6 or more Shackers playing L4D2, but never on a Shack server. (this is Gabe's fault somehow)
Other than that, I love the game.

I put in a package of bacon and let it sit for a few hours. Apparently I was a little drunker than I thought, and a few hours turned out to be around 6. The bacon has basically fallen apart. So I decided that there's plenty of room in there for more stuff, and chopped up a package of hotdogs and tossed it in as well.
There was still room for something else, so I also tossed in a frozen chicken breast.
I'm going to sleep now, so I'm going to let that simmer on low in there until I wake up.
