Alienware Adds Steam to PC Gaming Systems

by Jeff Mattas, Nov 24, 2009 5:18pm PST

Alienware gaming PCs will now come pre-loaded with the digital game distribution service Steam, as well as a copy of the critically acclaimed game Portal, according to the official Steam news site. Dell announced that all 'Area-51' and 'Aurora' desktops, along with the 'M17x' and 'M15x' laptops will include Valve's digital distribution service.

Frank Azor, Senior Manager of Product Planning for Dell's Gaming Group, explained the decision. "With its automatic game updates, easy friend finding and the ability to play your Steam purchased games on any PC, Valve has helped simplify PC Gaming to make it more enjoyable."

While this is great news for the digital distribution juggernaut, there are those who likely won't be happy about the partnership. Stardock's recent assertions that Steam already owns 70% of the digi-distribution market share lends even more weight to the notion of Steam's rising supremacy in the digital download marketplace.

  • People are being pretty stupid about this. Can we stop being petty and trollish? Regardless of who knows or doesn't know about Steam, it's fair to say that a lot of people use it and need it installed? Is it hard to install? No, not even a little bit, but computer manufacturers try to bundle software that they think the consumer would want or need. Far more often than not, it's bloat software that is useless, but this is actually a program that gets used. A lot. A lot of people are using it.

It makes a lot of sense actually, because if someone doesn't know about steam at the time of purchase, they can be introduced to it. If they do know about steam, chances are it's because they use it and will need it installed. I fail to see the need for all the drama.
