Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm, and Zune, Early Successes on Xbox LIVE

Microsoft issued a press release touting the initial success of the recent Xbox 360 update, which added social network connectivity, streaming music, and 1080p HD movie streaming for Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers.

According to Microsoft, nearly 2 million members logged into their Facebook accounts via Xbox Live during the first week. The number of Twitter users wasn't revealed, but Microsoft claims that it "...was also abuzz with the Xbox LIVE community posting tweets from around the globe."

On the streaming music side, the company said "almost one million" users created Last.fm profiles during week one, each spending an average of 40 minutes creating customized radio stations and finding music. To top things off, 1.7 million users also visited Zune video less than one week after the update.

During the same week, 2.2 million unique gamers also played "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," setting a new one-day record for Xbox LIVE on November 10th. Whether the update was planned to coincide with the Modern Warfare 2 release or was merely a happy coincidence is unknown. That said, a record-breaking weekend would seem like the ideal time to generate traffic for some new applications.

Yeah. The best part of Twitter is seeing the great links a lot of people post, and there's no way to see them at all on the 360, even though the console is clearly very capable of powering a decent web browser.

I'm glad it doesn't have a browser solely for the fact I won't see a ton of posts says "OMG SUPPORT FLASH" "OMG SUPPORT JAVASCRIPT" "OMG MICROSOFT ARE NOOBS THE JS CRASHES MY XBOX" "OMG WHY ASK ME IF I WANT TO PROCEED JUST LET ME PROCEED IF ITS SAFE AND OTHERWISE DONT"

My PSP came with a web browser and I thought it would be cool. Within 2 minutes I realized how retarded it was to put a browser on a console. You spend 5 minutes typing in a url and then you have to navigate the page with a Dpad. I see no reason when I own a computer that does all that very naturally.

Honestly, why do we keep trying to make everything all in one? If it's so good, why aren't we all driving around in mobile homes? It's "all in one". Lets put the toilet in the shower, all in one! (BTW, in the Japanese movie "Battle Royale", on of the characters lives in a small apartment where the bathroom is the size of a closet, had a sink, a toilet, and only enough space for only one person to stand. The "shower" was a shower head in the ceiling and a drain on the floor. The character dad killed himself because of their dire living situation) My point is, when you try to make something do too much, it doesn't do anything that well. The console streaming netflix works because there is no need to type and navigation is handled through menus.

I personally think the only thing that makes sense from this update is last.fm because it fits in very well with the whole "entertainment center" concept. My xbox sits on a shelf with a DVD player/surround sound combo, so if I plug it into that, BAM I get last.fm on my surround sound in my living room. Thats great value.

As for twitter, facebook, and web browsers, not a single person has been able to come up with any reason why it would be preferable to access it through your xbox rather than your PC. What is the advantage? Seriously, where is the value? If you are addicted to facebook and need your fix, I guess it would work just like a crack head might down 2 monster energy drinks, but can anyone tell me how it's not just a gimmick?
