PlayStation 3 Getting 3D Games as Sony Examines Subscription Services, Return to Profitability

The PlayStation 3 will indeed be upgraded to better support stereoscopic three-dimensional visuals, maker Sony has confirmed.

"All PS3 units will be firmware upgradeable to 3D," the company declared in a recent investors meeting that detailed plans to "release 3D games in line with Sony's 3D strategy."

Sony plans to launch the PlayStation 3 update and other initiatives, like accelerating 3D theater growth, in its 2010 fiscal year, which runs April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011.

Additionally, Sony intends to return its game business to profitability by the end of the same fiscal year through the expansion of "hardware software/sales and enrichment of PlayStation Network services" coupled with "cost reduction and other measures."

"In the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services," Sony's Kaz Hirai explained during the accompanying call, as reported by Destructoid.

Rival Microsoft offers Xbox 360 owners numerous services through an Xbox Live Gold subscription, such as online multiplayer, Netflix video streaming and early demo access. Sony has traditionally offered such services to PlayStation 3 users at no cost, though it sometimes sells beta and demo access through video magazine Qore.

I have a huge told-you-so for every Sony fanboy that talked about their "free" online service.

Wolf Blizter reporting from CNN hot off the vapourline

"We are getting reports from vague press releases that PSN Subscription services that apply to demos and basic mulitplayer are in the ballon."

"Take note while the Press release states 'in addition to the current free services', we believe(assume) we have to pay for the current free services as well."

I wonder how Sony will spin their response to this...
