Aliens vs. Predator GameStop Pre-Order Brings 'Exclusive' Multiplayer Skins

21
With such bonuses being all the rage these days, publisher Sega and developer Rebellion have paired with GameStop to offer pre-orders some extra Aliens vs. Predator content.

Pre-ordering the xenomorph shooter from the retailer will net a download code for three "exclusive" multiplayer skins "while supplies last." The promotion covers all three versions--PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The game itself is due out in February, with details and images of the three skins--SGT. Kaneko, Number Six, Alien Head Preadtor--following just below:

SGT. Kaneko
U.S.C.M. #2384-52, Male.
Wrote the book on small-scale Xeno containment. Veteran of 27 drops, including post-incident quarantine of Fiorina 'Fury' 161. A good motivator. Hard, but fair.

Number Six
W-Y Product Ref# 0000-6
Personally selected by Karl Bishop Weyland for intensive testing at the Weyland-Yutani research lab on BG-386, this Xenomorph has a special destiny.

Alien Head Predator
AKA 'The Serpent Hunter'
A special mask was created for the most successful Xenomorph Hunter of all time. It brings honor to all who wear it.

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

A download code? What's to stop that from making its way onto the internet and then anybody using it? Doesn't sound exclusive at all.

      I imagine it'll be a single-use code.

That is traditionally how similar promotions have been handled in the past, yes.

Okay plan B: unless it's going to use something like the Steam Cloud, what's to stop the skins from making their way onto the internet and anybody downloading them? (consoles need not apply)

I feel that there'll definitely be a way for anyone to get these, if people want them bad enough.

I feel that you definitely don't know what you're talking about.

I feel that you don't know how much modding allows on the PC when it comes to skins.

It's not like the Quake days.

Assuming AvP lets players replace models--which we don't know--there's no reason to think the changes would show up for other players.

Usually they don't, both sides need to have the same skin installed, which isn't really a problem in general. Replacing models might be trickier, but we're talking about the already built models here that you get from the unlock, those are obviously going to be put somewhere, so unless the game checks whether you're allowed to have the model or not --which may probably be hacked and is almost doubtful because it's extra time invested in something so irrelevant-- it should be fine.

Okay I admit there are several assumptions I'm making, but it goes along logical lines.

That reminds me of the Q2 days when everyone was using the default Grunt skin and most would assume you could see that they were actually using a Dalek .md2 or something and would be dissappointed when they discovered that no...they looked MORE like everyone else than if they had just changed their skin.

I also remember looking obsesively for a Vorlon model back in those days (I did find a DOOM guy model though...I think Phoenix may have modeled it back before I knew him).

Um, the people who would crack the game and figure out how to make the skins work, um....wouldn't care.
