Morning Discussion

by Alice O'Connor, Nov 16, 2009 6:00am PST

Dead Space's has given me a bad case of ventilation heebie jeebies, meaning I inch towards every fan, shaft, window and vent with immense caution then still jump when a fleshy monstrosity pops out. Which is fun enough but a little hollow.

I am of course an idiot for jumping but it feels like Dead Space is blowing its load on cheap scares to the detriment of what would otherwise be a terrifying scenario. Comparisons to System Shock 2 are clearly invited so I suppose I'll mention that SS2's semi-random spawns helped create a more general and pervasive dread, though Dead Space of course intends to create a more tightly controlled experience.

I'm still having a ball, mind. It's a splendid monster mash and jolly good fun.
