ATI Radeon Announced

Well guys, just made my way home from the ATI Radeon announcement. It looks like the rumors going around about ATI finally having a contender for the top of the market is a reality. You can check out the full press release here. Here's some of the juice:

- Most advanced graphics chip ever designed, featuring 30 million transistors, in an .18 micron technology, giving it a higher transistor count than CPUs such as the Pentium III and Athlon. - First chip to support up to 128MB of double-data rate (DDR) memory at 200MHz - First graphics chip to break through the Gigatexel barrier with an awesome 1.5 Gigatexel per second rendering engine.
A few notes I took while attending the launch party down here in New Orleans for you guys:
- OEM shipping in June, retail shipping this summer - The 1.5 gigatexel number is achieved through "HyperZ" Z-buffer compression technology. The actual physical throughput is 1.2 gigatexels, but the compression squeezes a bit more performance equivalent to 1.5. - 200mhz core speed.
Lastly, you guys wanna see some previews of the card right? Here are a few for you to look at. iXBT, HotHardware, SharkyExtreme , and FiringSquad. Oh yeah, and I actually got a hold of a benchmark of the card, on a 866mhz P3 box running at 1280x1024 in Quake3, it cranked out about 56fps. That is on drivers several months away from release. We can expect 'substantial' increaes in performance I've been told.

  • ATI may have the most powerful card on the market, but I still won't buy it. They couldn't write drivers to save their lives. Same thing happened with the Rage Fury about 6-8 months ago. Awesome card, sucky drivers. The card STILL has sucky drivers.

I'm buying a GeForce after the GeForce2 or whatever it's called comes out, because hopefully the prices will drop and I can actually afford something more than my meager voodoo2. This thing is like an old man trying to run a marathon... Funny how Quake3 runs great but Battlezone 2, Allegiance, and USAF run like snot. 'Course, they didn't have Carmack programming for 'em... ;)

  • nVidia is shitting their pants about this card, I can guarantee it. Why Veggie? you ask. Okay, here's why. Where is the money in today's graphics market? Is it in retail or OEMs? "OEMs" you all say, and you are correct. Now, which company is the leading supplier of OEM parts? "ATI" you all say, and you are correct again. Look at those numbers for this card! Those aren't some half-ass, "we'll be almost as good" numbers, those are "fuck nVidia, go for the throat numbers," and with MAXX technology, they can throw another chip on that bad mofo and kick the shit out of any of the cards coming out in the next few months. Yes, ATI has had problems with drivers in the past, but that doesn't change the fact that they're number one in OEMs because of their ability to deliver high quantity, reasonably good parts on time. OEMs like that, and if they can achieve the same situation with this card, every OEM from Dell to Compaq is gonna put them in their boxes. We'll see what nVidia has up their sleeve tomorrow, but it's gonna be a hell of a fight. Also, I think that after seeing these specs we can count 3dfx out of this fight, and maybe for good.

  • It's too bad that these drivers are probably about as good as they are going to get.

Sure, they may squeeze out a few more FPS, but anyone who has owned an ATI card can tell you that they have some of the buggiest drivers out there. I've owned two ATI cards, and each one had MAJOR driver problems. Most games (like anything running OGL or Direct 3d) had major texture corruption at best or would crash at worst. ATI would deny there was a problem, then eventually admit that they had shitty drivers and would release a new beta driver which would fix one game while breaking another.

And as for ATI keeping promises, go do some research on what happenned with the Rage Fury and the Fury Pro. The Fury was several months late, and downclocked IIRC. The people who were promised driver support for video/tv in had to wait several months before they could use that feature, and the only reason they had to wait only several months was because a couple of guys hacked together their own driver set for the card. ATI's response was to basically try and shut down their website.

IMO, I wouldn't get too excited about this card until it's actually out (I would be really surprised if they make it out on time). Even then, I would really do ALOT of research on this card before I considered buying it. I would definetely check out sites like rageunderground.com to see if ATI has finally gotten their driver act together.

I'm not holding my breath though.
