ATI Radeon Announced
by Steve Gibson, Apr 24, 2000 9:03pm PDTWell guys, just made my way home from the ATI Radeon announcement. It looks like the rumors going around about ATI finally having a contender for the top of the market is a reality. You can check out the full press release here. Here's some of the juice:
- Most advanced graphics chip ever designed, featuring 30 million transistors, in an .18 micron technology, giving it a higher transistor count than CPUs such as the Pentium III and Athlon. - First chip to support up to 128MB of double-data rate (DDR) memory at 200MHz - First graphics chip to break through the Gigatexel barrier with an awesome 1.5 Gigatexel per second rendering engine.A few notes I took while attending the launch party down here in New Orleans for you guys:
- OEM shipping in June, retail shipping this summer - The 1.5 gigatexel number is achieved through "HyperZ" Z-buffer compression technology. The actual physical throughput is 1.2 gigatexels, but the compression squeezes a bit more performance equivalent to 1.5. - 200mhz core speed.Lastly, you guys wanna see some previews of the card right? Here are a few for you to look at. iXBT, HotHardware, SharkyExtreme , and FiringSquad. Oh yeah, and I actually got a hold of a benchmark of the card, on a 866mhz P3 box running at 1280x1024 in Quake3, it cranked out about 56fps. That is on drivers several months away from release. We can expect 'substantial' increaes in performance I've been told.

I'm buying a GeForce after the GeForce2 or whatever it's called comes out, because hopefully the prices will drop and I can actually afford something more than my meager voodoo2. This thing is like an old man trying to run a marathon... Funny how Quake3 runs great but Battlezone 2, Allegiance, and USAF run like snot. 'Course, they didn't have Carmack programming for 'em... ;)
My moron mate has allready pre-ordered he's v5, without (again) asking me about which is best - and wonders why I yell at him for being a silly fucker - he claims "nvidia suck" (having never owned a card) and then goes on to tell me how cool the v5 will be (having never read any previews except the original ones 3 months ago on product announcement)
these sort of people get 3dfx sales.
oh did i tell you about his idea of upgrading, so on a bh6 he bought a p3-600eb! - locked so it REQUIRES 133mhz fsb, specifically on a board that isnt designed for it - took me 2 days to convince him he wants the 550 or 600e, and 112mhz fsb, or a new board fricking moron

This card does vertex skinning for christs sake! I don't know what it is, but it's gotta make cum look translucent as it's flying onto a chick's face.

i'm not on the stats no more!!!!
BTW, Q3 can use 3 or 4 passes. Base texture, light map, shader, and bullet/explosion marks. That's four passes! Plus I wouldn't be surprised if some shader effects take more than one pass each.

Does the DC or PS2 support AA, since it's limited to 640x480?
ATI claims 30 million polygons per second with Radeon 256. How many can the DC or the PS2 pull?
I just wanna know how much ass the computer could be whoopin' (or not).

Problem for 3dfx is they CANNOT afford to have another $ losing card (i.e. VD3) without having severe impacts on its ability to compete in the future.
When computing power doubles every 2 years or so, and 3d technology is moving even faster, NO company can afford to miss its product cycle against its compeditors and stay on top.
btw- There is no Kaiser Sozza and there is no VD4. Think about it ;)

Sure, they may squeeze out a few more FPS, but anyone who has owned an ATI card can tell you that they have some of the buggiest drivers out there. I've owned two ATI cards, and each one had MAJOR driver problems. Most games (like anything running OGL or Direct 3d) had major texture corruption at best or would crash at worst. ATI would deny there was a problem, then eventually admit that they had shitty drivers and would release a new beta driver which would fix one game while breaking another.
And as for ATI keeping promises, go do some research on what happenned with the Rage Fury and the Fury Pro. The Fury was several months late, and downclocked IIRC. The people who were promised driver support for video/tv in had to wait several months before they could use that feature, and the only reason they had to wait only several months was because a couple of guys hacked together their own driver set for the card. ATI's response was to basically try and shut down their website.
IMO, I wouldn't get too excited about this card until it's actually out (I would be really surprised if they make it out on time). Even then, I would really do ALOT of research on this card before I considered buying it. I would definetely check out sites like rageunderground.com to see if ATI has finally gotten their driver act together.
I'm not holding my breath though.

but can they overtake nVidia? THIS SUMMER IS GOING TO ROCK!!!!!
I HAVE A GOOD JOB AND MONEY TO SPEND ON MY COMPUTER! BUST IT UP IN nVIDIA'S HIZOUSE, ATI!!
V5 is pulling ~40 fps at that res/color depth.
Geforce DDR is pulling ~33 fps at that res/color depth.
Just gotta wait and see what the NV15 has in store.
Oh and if they can get this card out in June (vs August-ish) then they just might have a contendah! Assuming their drivers dont lick a dogs nuts...
