Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Declared Biggest Launch in Entertainment History
by Alice O'Connor, Nov 12, 2009 5:05am PSTCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 publisher Activision has declared this week's release of Infinity Ward's shooter "the biggest launch in history across all forms of entertainment."
Approximately 4.7 million copies of Modern Warfare 2 were bought within the first 24 hours of sale in North America and the United Kingdom alone according to internal estimates, which Activision works out as $310 million of sell-through sales.
Modern Warfare 2 was released for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on Tuesday, with many stores opening at midnight for the occasion including 10,000 in the USA.
So great was the launch, Infinity's Ward Robert Bowling explained, that Sony's PlayStation Network was "overwhelmed" by the glut of players on PlayStation 3 and many were left unable to play online--an issue which should now be rectified.

I remember dedicated server from the CounterStrike days. I remember quiting because I hated wading through a server list and trying to find something that wasn't just Dust or Dust 2, but also wasn't some kind of mod server. It makes finding a needle in a haystack look easy. Then, you find a server, and get kicked because of some stupid weapon rule, or they don't like you using a certain spot on a map. Yes, I have been kicked because I wanted to go to a spot on the map they didn't like people using.
I don't have any of those headaches with matchmaking. I click the gametype and boom, Im in a game within 30 seconds with no stupid rules, no banned weapons, no getting kicked from a server that lists 12/16 because the last 4 slots are "reserved".
I understand there is a trade off. It's a good one to me. I like modding as much as the other guy, but with Counterstrike, it ruined the game. CS is not what it used to be, I wish I could just find a server that plays the game as is. No one bitching about the AWP (AWM to some), the auto shotty, no stupid custom maps that are fucking awful. Some maps were great, but far more were terrible.
