Evening Reading: Bumpy Hump Day

You might have noticed it was a little quiet around here today. It started with a relatively quiet day for news in the wake of yesterday's Modern Warfare 2 launch. We're also missing Chris who finally succumbed to the flu he's been fighting. And then I spent part of my afternoon doing a guest appearance via Skype on the Kombobreaker podcast. It's been a long day.

I won't lie; I'm ready to get home and back to playing Dragon Age. From all the threads we've had I expected it to be great and it has not disappointed. I'm still pretty early on but it has me thinking about what it takes to get high fantasy right. Dragon Age is totally getting it for me but that's despite some glaring elements I thought were the hallmarks of doom. For one it plays so much on the Lord of the Rings. I practically expect Gandalf to come riding through the forest at any moment. But instead of coming off as a cheap imitation I'm getting drawn into the world that much more. And then there's the voice work. Most of it is pretty solid but every so often one of the characters speaks and I wonder if it was recorded in an introductory theater class. Yet it has me completely wrapped up in the game. Go figure.

So remember the other day how Aerosmith was looking for a new singer? Now maybe Steven Tyler isn't leaving Aerosmith but it sounds like Joe Perry isn't exactly happy either.

Is it just me, or does Garnett's writing lack a certain... panache that our other Shackdroids seem to have? I really can't place my finger on it. It's good and all... but it seems more journalistic I guess, like he's writing for specific column inches and has to adhere to the AP Stylebook, which then sucks the personality right out of it. :|

Hey Shack

How would I manually set the resolution in Windows7, so that on the next load it loads up at the specified resolution, and not it's current default.

I locked my 3007 dell into 1920x1080 on a computer that can't handle it, and no spare monitor that can scale to utilize.

Dragon Age is such a mediocre game.

The only thing about it worth playing for is the character dialogue you get when you're camped. Everything else - the gameplay, the story, the world, the lore, the graphics, the music, the sound effects are just so mind numbingly boring and lacking inspiration. It's like BioWare decided to make the most cliche and derivative game they could.

I want to buy my mom a 42" tv at Best Buy. There is a 720p Panasonic Plasma and a 1080p Insignia LCD on sale. Which one is better? They like a Sony there but it may be the only one in the store connected with HDMI, do stores still pull that trick on the expensive TVs or is Sony that much better? I can't afford one of those just yet.

I follow all the win7 blogs and they have spent quite a few posts talking about how Win7 has all kinds of tricks for power conservation and better battery life. I'm really surprised by these results. My gut tells me that there is something missing so I'll be interested to see what the Microsoft reaction is. What will really disappoint me is if this is an accurate review it is simply ignored.

Some of these are months old but still need answering. People should learn that dropping by for a cup of tea is the only reliable way to contact me. I don't care if you are a games developer living in Outer Mongolia, you'll simply have to walk.

Is Thunderbird still top dog?

I find myself actually liking Outlook and wishing I had something like that at home but free and not full of security holes. :/

Don't suppose there's any sort of client that deals w/ GMail natively instead of over IMAP, is there? I'd use the web app, but I just prefer having e-mail in a separate application than my browser, plus I don't like having to log in to check it...

So I played about 3 hours worth of Call of Duty: MW2 multiplayer, mostly free-for-all's. I had absolutely no problems, no lag and games popped up instantly. With the level sizes, I think the player # might be right on. Any more and it's a spawn/die thing. I did thoroughly enjoy the MP, made it to level 9 and now I'm calling it a night. I'll be up for some games tomorrow.

TLDR: PC version is just fine.
