Evening Reading: War Modernized

I just finished pressing "Post" to publish my thoughts on Modern Warfare 2. If things go as planned we'll have an official review up Friday too. It's funny how it all worked out. To play the completed game we had to go on that trip to the review event and agree to today's embargo. Of course, as it turned out street date didn't hold and I could have just played it on my own over the weekend. Whatever. The reality of those events is far less glamorous than you'd think. Most of us take what we do seriously and are there for the games.

For those playing MW2 I'm curious what you think of the game. I'm expecting plenty of heat for not gushing over the single-player. It's become the summer action blockbuster flick of the biz. Don't expect more and you can enjoy all the stuff that blows up real good. And, now I know this is going to be a small subset, for those who also finished 50 Cent Blood in the Sand, tell me that MW2 isn't basically the same ending. And 50 was around the team a lot during development. Just saying.

There were a few other things that happened today:

As you head out into the rest of the night try to be more careful than this very inebriated Bostonian who fell in front of a subway train.

And how about a moment of silence for the poor tropical fish who perished when Yamile Campuzano-Martine smashed into a 1,500 gallon aquarium at the Tampa airport.

I always like how the way you frame a picture can completely skew what is actually going on. Took this one last weekend:

I'm getting fed up with Dragon Age. Even on "normal" all the combat is just stupidly difficult. Joy, I get to do almost every fight two or three times, with slight variations on tactics making battles swing from total party wipe to total survival for no readily apparent reason.

Modern Warfare 2: Completed. I started at around 8 this evening and wrapped up maybe 20 minutes ago, so in total a five hour session? I started on hardened and dropped it to regular about half way through. Good times. Now it's time for the multiplayer.

Ok ... Wtf is there no uproar from folks who bought Modern Warfare 2 on steam.. via pre-order only to find out that Activision and all the Retailers made a backdoor deal and said.. you can't activate the game till thursday?

.But if you bought the game on release day from a retailer... it will activate from steam immediately?!!!

WTF is that shit? Its like Activision wants the pc version of the game to be known as the sucktastic version?
And now John Carmack suggests... they might follow the mp system used in Modern warfare 2.... as in no dedicated server support?

Then we get 2 Posts from the Shack team about Modern.. and no mention of this fucked up shit. instead its all about this stupid Press junket to some swank hotel in Cali. Sigh selling out really has killed the journalistic integrity of this place.

Has anyone managed to actually preload left 4 dead 2 yet? I am constantly receiving servers too busy errors and I've been trying several times a day since preloading became possible. I don't want to be stuck downloading it when the game is activated :(

Maybe certain regions get a different access priority for the servers?

At least the demo has updated successfully.

Hey shack, I have a nice problem to have right now:

I won a game at work. Any game, I can just choose it and it's mine. My problem ? In the past weeks, i kinda overloaded my new games queue and bought 4-5 new games i wanted. I have Torchlight, L4d2, Brutal Legend, WotSamurai3, Ratchet and Clank 6, Dragon Age, Borderlands (yuck)... I'm out of inspiration.

There are 2 games i would buy eventualy on the clearance rack: Uncharted 2 and MW2. Which should I choose? Also, feel free to suggest any other game you might feel I need to play!

Sent my 2 busted XBOX's in today , 1 red ringed the other would just freeze up / not read discs ... hopefully they fix both. I've never sent one in before but i hope the turnaround is faster than what most of you have said in the past!

Besides that i haven't even cracked Drakes 2 yet, i've been putting all my time in Dragon Age. Great game!

Welp, after about six months, the $250 Ikea couch finally gave up the last ghost. It's been patched in two places and had an extra set of supports on the bottom, and I've basically been waiting for it to properly die. And so, with heavy heart, I think we're off there again tomorrow, except this time I'm buying something with a 10-year warranty >:(

I wish regular furniture stores weren't full of awful greasebags/sold things that I actually found attractive.

So while Dragons Age is a great game is everyone agreed that it is an awful implementation of DLC? I'm pretty sure when the DLC concept was first introduced this is where the naysayers were afraid it would lead.

Reading the lost symbol

dan brown probably did not do enough research on the iphone. It is not supposed to light up your face when you use it as a phone, it should turn off the screen because of the proximity sensor

Got some questions and spoilers about Leliana's development:

So has anyone gotten her to turn back into an assassin?

I can't find much detail on that on the web, aside from the fact that it's possible after you deal with Marjolaine, which I've done both ways. After that event, and nudging her in the proper direction, doesn't seem like anything changes.
