Left 4 Dead Team-based Versus Matchmaking Added
by Alice O'Connor, Nov 10, 2009 11:30am PSTA Left 4 Dead patch yesterday added support for 4v4 Versus mode matchmaking, allowing teams of players to find matches against similarly organised opponents.
The feature was originally announced in April and its late arrival helped fuel the Left 4 Dead 2 boycott movement, who were dissatisfied with Valve's post-release support.
The sequel Left 4 Dead 2 arrives for PC and Xbox 360 on November 17. The demo is now available to everyone on all platforms, after opening to Live Silver members today.

If the survivors are getting stomped, they simply get to try again, no big. If they're really getting stomped super hard, maybe the infected players will back off a bit to let the game get going forward. Why would they do that? Because it's less competitive and they're being good sports.
If the infected are getting stomped, it doesn't matter because you won't be compared to the other team at the end of the round. You can just keep spawning and attacking and it'll all be over soon enough, and there is no scoreboard shame.
That being said, the survivors can still have a team score that they can be proud of if they do well, but it won't be compared to the other team, so there's no ragequit inducing humiliation involved. And the infected will have their points like in versus that are just for fun brownie points that they also can screen shot and show if they have an awesome round. Everyone wins.
Thoughts? Comments? I've posted this before, but I think it's still a good idea. It's been stated that this could probably be implemented as a mod, but I think it'd be nice to have it as an option on the menu.

I don't understand how people can imagine an old-type server browser system could work well for L4D, this is nothing like classic FPS games like cod/tf2/cs, match-making is definitely the way to go to get proper games going here.

- completely automatic which maybe working, I don't know
- server browser with rated matches and servers. You cannot join matches rated too much below your skill level, and you can't enter matches which are rated too much above you either.
This option is way better than what Valve offers with L4D and L4D2 for that matter. Completely automated sorting of players would never work as good. User input is a must imho, at least on some levels.
