Morning Discussion
by Alice O'Connor, Nov 05, 2009 3:45am PSTRemember remember the fifth of November, with gunpowder, treason and oh my giddy aunt a free version of Unreal Engine 3! Between the Unreal Development kit and the free release of Unity, this has to be a fantastic time for bedroom developers.
The UDK is extra exciting to me. Not only is the free release of such a prolific current engine staggering, it's surely more appealing to the lovely modding community. Standalone releases are an obvious benefit and will no doubt help them find audiences, but with access to the complete framework I expect them to produce delicious fruit.
Of course, the UDK could be used for almost anything by almost anyone. We're certain to see some weird and wonderful creations from amateurs and veterans alike.

I have a RAID question. I have a server which can houses 4 250GB hot plug hard drives and a controller which will perform RAID6. I need suggestions on how to best configure the RAID with such a limited number of drives. On this server I will need obviously a partition for the OS, a partition for the app, and a partition for data back ups (this is per the application vendor and is part of their support requirements).
My normal preference is RAID 1 on the OS, and RAID5/6 with a hot spare on the rest, this isn't really feasible with a limited number of disk. How would the smart people here configure this? Up-time and availability are the primary concerns here.

Fuck you IW. Anyone else read the latest developer chat thing? No console support. No ability to remove perks/weapons/tweak things on the PC version. No LEAN! No way to kick players from ranked matches. No ability to change the FOV and my guess would be zero mod tools.
"We want you to play the game the way we designed and balanced it." Is their excuse.
Guess I won't be picking this up :(. Shame, that. I really liked MW.

In the last couple of years, I've become quite a fan of Steam, one could even say a spokesperson for it, since I've gotten numerous people to use it with my recommendations. I feel services like it are the future and salvation of PC gaming. Tonight, my knight in shining armor has let me down, and I feel entitled enough[sic] to take this out on the Shack.
I bought Dragon Age over the web from work. The second I get home, I start the download. 15 gigs, that's big, but then again I have a 110M/5M line so that should be no more than 1-3 hours of downloading for me, based on previous Steam speeds. I didn't want to spend my time waiting just staring at the screen, so I fire up Borderlands. I play for a while, and then alt-tab to find out how far along I've gotten in the download. It has been paused. Steam did not tell me it paused it. I anger. After some fucking about, I get it to download while I play. I play and get to about 40% downloaded while doing so. The instant I quit Borderlands Steam halts. After a good while of waiting, my W7 tells me it has stopped responding, and I kill the process. I restart steam, and find that the download is back at 0%, and now says "updating" instead of "downloading". It won't exceed the speed of 50k/s. I choose to delete the local content, after which Steam crashes again. Now it won't restart. I reboot, and it starts up, and the download begins again. Too bad that the speed has gone down from 3M/sec+ to less than 1M/sec.
It's going to be around midnight when it arrives, if it does. One might be asking what the hell is my point, are you seriously crying about the fact that you can't download 15 gigs in a few hours?
Yes, I am. At least over here in Finland I'm paying the exact same price for the game as I would at a retailer, as I do with most new Steam games, sometimes I even pay more. I do this because it's handy. I don't need to go shop, I won't need to worry about cd keys, keeping my serials safe or reinstallations after my Windows gets borked. When it goes bad like this, I have absolutely zero reason to prefer Steam over buying a physical copy. Add server capacity, test your software more before releases, give me an easy-to-use option to keep on downloading even when I'm playing something else if my machine can handle it. Make paying these premium prices for less than what I essentially get if I go and buy it from the shop worth it. Steam has done great 90% of the time (last time I had serious problem was when FO3 was released and servers were jammed) but 90% is not good enough, especially when it's a bloody Bioware game I'm waiting for here. God damnit.
Thanks.

tl;dr: They're going to try and implement a three strikes policy for copyright infringement. After your third strike, nobody can sell you internet access for one year.

I wish EVERY classic movie that is restored would include a feature where they showed off a comparison between the different versions of the film. It is easy to forget how bad the originals looked.

Played for around 5 hours or so last night - pretty EPIC game. Defeated the Ogre in the tower last night on my first try (on Normal difficultly) with a Circle Mage, Alistar, my dog, and my Rogue (Archery focused).

I was at about 10% download, then restarted steam, it went back to 0%
Then, as it must've unlocked - it decrypted itself - and went back to 0%
Everytime I restart steam it starts back at 0%....obviously I intend to keep steam on overnight seeing as its 7 gigs to download but I have no idea how much I've downloaded so far :(
