Evening Reading: Dragons and Zombies

By Garnett Lee, Nov 03, 2009 6:46pm PST I'm going out on a limb here and betting that more than a couple of you will be spending most of this evening in the Left 4 Dead 2 demo, Dragon Age Origins, or both. We were talking about the fall gaming deluge today and figured that we're already past the midpoint. Looking at the release list, Modern Warfare 2 looms over the remaining pre-Thanksgiving releases and after that everyone's in the fray. That gives us December to play games. But it isn't a long break. The first part of next year holds plenty of big releases.

And you probably thought I was going off on some rant about enough already with the Dragons and Zombies. Yeah, right. Bring 'em.

  • Okay, so... I had a membership at a 24 Hour Fitness that I used for six months or something. I was moving out of the area, so I canceled the membership on like October 15th, give or take a day or two. They tell me my membership is active until the 21st or so. Great. Then on October 26th I get a charge for the next month, which doesn't make me particularly happy, given that it's a long time after I canceled and also a pretty long time after my last possible date of visit. I called them up about it, and they tell me that they have a "30 day cancellation policy", meaning in effect that you have to cancel a month in advance of the next billing period date if you want to avoid getting billed for the next month.

It seems to me that they're basically making you pay for an extra month of service that you won't be able to use the facilities, and that's pretty shitty. I'm thinking of just disputing the charge. Has anyone encountered a situation like this before?
