With Grand Theft Auto IV's downloadable "Ballad of Gay Tony" expansion hitting Xbox 360 tomorrow, developer Rockstar wants you to meet new protagonist Luis Lopez.

"Gay Tony" will be available as a 1600 MS Point ($20) download for those that own Grand Theft Auto IV. It will also be on the Xbox 360-only "Episodes From Liberty City" disc, where it's playable without a copy of GTA4. Both disc and download are due tomorrow.

Looks like a generic latino thug and sounds like a mediocre Scarface impersonator. Great. Of all the stories they could have told, Packie and his brothers, Dwayne, etc. They choose to have you play as a character who has almost no involvement in IV's story and then they have you working for a flamboyantly gay nightclub owner and his equally flamboyant friends. (None of whom have any relation to IV or any other GTA stories)

    What?

It seems like Rockstar is turning GTA into a comedy with the Yusuf Amir and Robot Bubblegum trailers. What are they thinking? These are CRIME games, keep the terrible, juvenille jokes/characters to a minimum.

GTA has always had a tongue n' cheek design to them. Both in characters and story. This is nothing new.

Yeah, he does appear briefly but he isn't really a part of the story and he doesn't have any legitimite/important dialogue or interaction(s) with any GTA characters. He appears for less than 1 minute and says all of one line, I really don't think that makes him an integral part of the story. This wouldn't really matter if the main character was unique, likeable etc. but I still stand by my claim that he's just a generic thug who sounds like a Scarface wannabe.

All I'm saying is that Rockstar should have chosen a protagonist that had some real relevance to IV's story or someone that gamers had prior knowledge of/had history with. Forget all the people they could have used from IV, they had everyone from GTA III as options too. (It is set in Liberty City afterall.)

And godhatesfatpeople (great name by the way), I know GTA has always had a comedy element but going back to III and Vice City it was always more dark comedy than slapstick/juvenile like it sometimes is in IV.

Why does he need to have important dialogue to count? This isn't a movie where the number of dialogue = importance, and a lack of dialogue means a character almost doesn't exist.

This is a game. Games are in 3D like real life. Everybody has a storyline in real life. So I don't see why he couldn't be an unique, interesting character. It doesn't even matter if he's likable, as long as he's compelling.
