Modern Warfare 2 Gets Third Person Mode
by Chris Faylor, Oct 26, 2009 2:20pm PDTAfter a slideshow masquerading as a video suggested that first-person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 could also be played from a third person perspective, Joystiq has details on the new view from developer Infinity Ward.
"This is just another cool way to play the game," noted IW's Robert 'fourzerotwo' Bowling. He explained that the alternate view is only available via dedicated playlists and private multiplayer matches. Players won't be able to swap between the views mid-match, as the camera is determined by match settings.
"It's not something you can toggle on and off in ANY game," he added. "You obviously will still have the option to play gametypes normal as well." More details and a better explanation of the new view should arrive soon via a supposedly "awesome trailer."
Modern Warfare 2 hits PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 10.

It's a pretty good idea to not allow switching while in game, because then players could use it to see around corners while playing others using the first person perspective. As I understand it, thats how tribes works. Instead, you will have FPS gametypes, then a list of gametypes using 3rd person depending on which perspective you like using. THis allows them to compete in 2 different genres, thus increasing their potential audience beyond just FPS players.
Do any of you really have a reason it's dumb other than you won't use it...?

Quake 3 Arena: "cg_thirdperson 1". It's not even cheat-protected, so you can toggle it on and off in ANY game.
Unreal / UT also had "behindview 1", but I don't remember if that was cheat-protected.

Nascar and F1 racing are on the forefront of technology. Radials, EFI and just about every drop of power you enjoy out of your daily driver started on a track at 200+ MPH. NOW what if one day Nascar and F1 racers had to adhere to the same standards as the commercial market? No more 200+MPH cars. No more development at all. Everything would be standardized and regulated. NO MORE INNOVATION. What would happen in a few years? Racing would die out and with it all the fruits it bared. You end up with bland cars no one would want to drive.
You see now? Consoles NEED PC gaming for its own survival. Without the PC gaming market pushing the envelope consoles will become stale and bland. Think its not happening? How about an estimated 7 year life span for the current consoles and the bastardization of CoD:MW2 on the PC. 10 years from now games like Crysis, Doom 3 and the like will be unheard of. We will be in a full blown socialized gaming market with a bunch of half ass inbred clones.
So keep bickering you dumbasses.

Where are my dedicated servers? You add a extra feature for a small niche of PC gamers, but take away already existing features that all PC gamers love. I don't understand this. It'd be nice if we got more then a PR BS statement for once. Like "the marketing guys made us do it" or something.

He's not hacking, he just turned right so his floating 3rd person view could see you over that wall.
THAT is lame.

1. Can you set the single player to thrid person?
2. Can you toggle the view mode in the single player game?
3. Is the code for third person in the PC version?
Hopefuly one of these are true, now that is rad. I never understood why all FPS don't have the ability to switch, does it hurt anyone? (other than extra camera work, and animation makes no sense why no to through it in?)
Nice, thanks for the info.

FPS make her sick just to watch mostly, but third person usually fine. Maybe I will get a second copy now.
So that's still possible? I'm confused.

Also, cg_thirdperson WAS cheat-protected in Quake3 unless you started a map with \devmap. There is a way to get it though on a normal server, I wonder if it works on all of the Call of Duties (probably). Here's what you do:
start a map with \devmap
enter in cg_thirdperson 1
disconnect
join a public server
the cvar doesn't clear, so you should be in 3rd person mode (but you can't change back since cheat protected).
Sheesh, it's not that PC gamers aren't the ones getting jacked for a change. Between the ports from FEAR2, OpFlash 2 and Red Faction Guerilla along with the circus at Infinite Ward, it's nice to see someone catering to the PC market.
Keep this up and you will get all our business. BTW, I'm a console gamer too but PC is my primary gaming rig.

Dr. Alco already has a Steam group set up for the remaining few of you that still intend to buy the PC version.

What other new features does this have that would motivate someone to get this game, assuming I was still having fun with MW1?
What does MW2 do differently that would make it better or more versatile or more entertaining?

I've never liked it, and I find more and more 'consoled' games going this perspective and its sad.
I find a lot of immersion is lost in it.
I know its an option, but who gives a fuck at this point. This game has been nothing but a disappointment, and I'm glad I'm seeing all this shit now, so I can save my money.
