Modern Warfare 2 Gets Third Person Mode

By Chris Faylor, Oct 26, 2009 2:20pm PDT After a slideshow masquerading as a video suggested that first-person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 could also be played from a third person perspective, Joystiq has details on the new view from developer Infinity Ward.

"This is just another cool way to play the game," noted IW's Robert 'fourzerotwo' Bowling. He explained that the alternate view is only available via dedicated playlists and private multiplayer matches. Players won't be able to swap between the views mid-match, as the camera is determined by match settings.

"It's not something you can toggle on and off in ANY game," he added. "You obviously will still have the option to play gametypes normal as well." More details and a better explanation of the new view should arrive soon via a supposedly "awesome trailer."

Modern Warfare 2 hits PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 10.

  • Kind of an odd thing to announce, so all they did was, in a certain gametype/match, was unmark cg_thirdperson (Q3 cvar) as cheat protected.

Also, cg_thirdperson WAS cheat-protected in Quake3 unless you started a map with \devmap. There is a way to get it though on a normal server, I wonder if it works on all of the Call of Duties (probably). Here's what you do:

    start a map with \devmap
    enter in cg_thirdperson 1
    disconnect
    join a public server
the cvar doesn't clear, so you should be in 3rd person mode (but you can't change back since cheat protected).
