Star Trek Online Closed Beta Begins Today

The closed beta phase of Cryptic's upcoming MMO Star Trek Online began today, according to the company.

"We're pleased to begin sharing our addition to Star Trek's legendary story with the public," offered STO producer Craig Zinkievich. "We know fans of Star Trek, and fans of MMOs, will be incredibly impressed by what they see when they play Star Trek Online."

Those hoping to get into the beta can still sign up on the official site. Otherwise, you'll be waiting until February 2010 for the PC game to launch.

So far this looks to me like Pirates of the Burning Sea w/ Star Trek. I think that's mostly a good thing as PoTBS had a lot of great concepts and very cool ship combat. BUT! the avatar/on foot stuff was weak, so I hope Cryptic isn't stretched too thin in making a space game and a ground combat game.

Hopefully they can also put in the MMO knowledge that have from their two prior games...which is something PoTBS lacked at times.

This would be the first MMO I may consider buying, but like almost all other MMO's, I think it's going to be released 6 months too early.
