Dead Space Extraction Sales Slow, Analyst Points to Poor Marketing
by Nick Breckon, Oct 21, 2009 4:20pm PDTSales of Visceral Games' Dead Space Extraction--the Wii rail shooter adaptation of the original Dead Space--have been unimpressive following its September 29 release, leading one analyst to blame a lackluster EA marketing campaign.
The game sold only 9,000 copies in the US between September 29 and October 3, according to NPD sales data.
"Electronic Arts didn't market Dead Space Extraction as much as it does with other titles," said EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich to Edge.
"The success or failure of a Wii title usually correlates directly to marketing spend," he added. "If Electronic Arts spent little on marketing, I am sure the sell through was no surprise to them. So I do not believe sell through was a disappointment to EA."

Anyways, give it time. The original DS wasn't a runaway success either, but unlike this game, at least that one wasn't a rail-shooter, so it really had more going for it.
I really liked Dead Space, so I bought this Wii variant and ended up really enjoying it. I hope in the long run it does well, but I can't say I'll buy another rail-shooter. EA has just used up its allowance.

All I hope is they don't waste these assets. I loved the dead space universe.

Plenty of good games and films were initial failures only to become profitable later. Not so true for games as films, sadly - poor graphics and incompatability turn people off.

1. $60 CDN. For a mature rail shooting Wii game? HOTD Overkill is $40 CDN. RE4 is $30. Mad World is $35... etc etc
2. Availability. Neither Future Shop nor Best Buy near my place are currently carrying it. And at EB Games it is all but hidden, behind the counter.
3. Mature titles don't sell well on Wii, period. Probably similar reason why there's not a lot of Cooking Mama type games for PS360? No one who has a PS360 will buy it. 0.o
Ok I am ready to take my position as VP of Marketing now for EA. :)
