Evening Reading

I've had a headache for the better part of a week. This crazy fall weather and its agonizing pressure systems will be the death of me.

In other exciting news, I bought a pair of Sennheiser PC 350's for gaming. I like them, though I hadn't anticipated the deafening effect of air-tight, closed-ear headphones while voice chatting. I can't shake the feeling that everything coming out of my mouth is unintelligible garbage.

The thing that bugs me about that, though, is that I'm registered with GT and my birthday is entered into the site.

Surely they could do something with that?

            • reply
              October 19, 2009 6:48 PM

depends on how the gate is coded. Is it just a method being called, and is that method public?

They'd have to take the birthdate from the database, convert it to something the age gate method reads, and then send it over.

So, as long as its not badly designed, probably easy. If it isn't designed for it though, probably not worth the hassle.

              October 19, 2009 6:49 PM

well that's just a coding issue. lots of sites I imagine had to wedge it in after the fact so you end up with some half-assed implementations.

I thought I remembered a post by someone, a dev maybe? That said it was ESRB's doing that you had to enter you birthday in every time registered or not.

So many people born on January 1.

Seriously, this is the kind of thing Facebook is for. Why not just check my logged in profile and see if I'm 18.

meh, it takes about 0.5 seconds to enter 1/1/1900. I got to imagine that birthdate is pretty popular.

        October 19, 2009 7:01 PM

You'll only use the healing items in the early part of the game. Eventually, the special power you unlock at level 5 will be the primary way you heal yourself. Also, with high level perks, the soldier can shoot bullets at you to heal you/reload your ammo.

yeah, that looked like it might be fun. I probably wont start with a hunter though, since I have watched so much of people playing him on feeds that I feel like I already have. think brick or lilith will be my 1st.

Here's my level 46 Lilith tree. It's really good, and it's worth going down the middle tree far enough to get the shock damage when phasewalking perk. It destroys shields. Also, you'll find gear that adds points to these skills, and they don't seem to let you go above level 5, so you can spread the points around.

The good news is respecing is cheap.

huh, thought the devs said gear could take you over 5. that may change things for me, but I was gonna try spreading points out vs concentrating anyway. like that build, looks fun, and I bet the daze is useful. I was sad to leave that out of mine.

            October 19, 2009 7:23 PM

I haven't done extensive testing, so I could be wrong.

With Lilith if you specialize in SMGs (as seems to be intended), you fire so many bullets that a 10% chance to daze is really all you need to keep everything dazed all the time.

Dazed enemies move slower, shoot slower, and even their projectiles are slow. It's dead useful.

            October 19, 2009 7:42 PM

you can get more than 5 points in a skill from a class mod. you can't, however, get points from a class mod that you haven't already invested a point in.

In my experience, the skills you want are the ones that let you jam that power as much as possible. The turret, hawk, punchyness, and phasewalk are all incredibly powerful.

I wanted to be excited for this game but after looking at the skill tree I lost a lot of interest. No additional skills? A weak, very general skill tree that offers only a little bit of focus in certain areas seems so boring.

        October 19, 2009 7:14 PM

The skilltrees are indeed quite lame compared to other RPGs like WoW or Diablo II, but the gameplay - the shooting - is fun and rewarding enough that you probably won't be bothered by that too much. Also, the guns are kinda like abilities by themselves because they're very different in the way you fight with them.
