September Sales: PlayStation 3 Beats the Xbox 360, Wii for the First Time

Sony had a big month in September, with the PlayStation 3 claiming the top spot in console hardware sales for the first time, according to NPD's US sales data.

"Compared to last September, the PS3 was the big winner, more than doubling last year's sales," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "This portrays a very strong consumer reaction to the price decrease as August and September both realized a lift of more than 70% over the prior month."

The PlayStation 3 Slim was announced in late August, dropping the price of the console to $300. Microsoft followed suit with its own Xbox 360 price cut to $300, while Nintendo lowered the price of the Wii to $200 in late September.

Check out the final numbers below:

  1. Nintendo DS - 524,200 units sold
  2. PlayStation 3 - 491,800
  3. Wii - 462,800
  4. Xbox 360 - 352,600
  5. PlayStation Portable - 190,400
  6. PlayStation 2 - 146,000

I guess that depends on whether you like having more good games to play.

Yeah, I think it's obviously going to depend on what games you like, along with whether you've already got a Blu-ray player.

Hardware wise, yeah. I would also agree about games, but I think that's a matter of opinion because different people like different types of games.

What you can't say anymore is that the ps3 doesn't have a good library.

Blu-ray players go for $200, so they're throwing in a console with atleast equivalent in capability to a 360 for $100 more and that's not a deal? You guys are tough to please.

PS3 is also one of the best Blu-ray players on the market. Load times are very fast compared to stand alone models. It also supports all Blu-ray Profile features.

To get picky that might mean it's the best deal in electronics, but not necessarily in gaming. Doesn't really matter, it's a great deal for anybody who doesn't have a blu-ray player, even if they already have a 360.
