Borderlands TV Spot Touts '87 Bazillion Guns'

The fall games season is officially underway, and the publishers are off to the races. Gearbox's Borderlands is out of the gate with this TV spot, plugging the game's four player co-op, item randomization, and friendly NPC inhabitants.

Borderlands hits the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 20 and the PC on October 26.

This seems very much like a community style game. What kind of matchmaking system is included? Are they using Steam's built-in Community functions, or did they tack on some POS system like Games for Windows Live (like Dawn of War 2 did, one reason I _didn't_ buy the game), or do they not have any system at all? Will there be third party servers, or will players host games locally with you having to connect to an IP address manually (or some other annoying bullshit, versus a server browser or connecting to a friend via a friend's list)?

My nagging question about this game is this:

So aside from the impossible-to-play-them-all bazillions of guns what does Borderlands offer gameplay-wise that I can't get somewhere else?

From what I've seen the game is an FPS with RPG elements that allows you to explore the game world, kill lots of NPCs with guns and play co-op. Because there are already dozens of games out there that offer many, most or all of those features I think I'm inclined to stick with those and be content to miss out on the craploads of guns that probably aren't all that much different than guns we've seen before anyway.

What is everyone talking about...Diablo mixed with FPS? You mean Fallout 3? Which IMO sucked. Became very boring to fast. Same thing over and over again. Dialogue didn't captivate anyone.

If they can make it not suck like Fallout 3 then yeah I'm on board.

Meh, I looked, but i cna't see the point of cell-shaders in games, it takes away the immersion...am I playing a game in a 3D world, or reading a comic book...
Once they strat drawing thick black lines around the outside of everythign that's not background, it stands out too much, loses believability (I know, I know)
Just my opinion, not my cup of coffee, I'm sure it'll be a blast for the rest of you though.

Are there any unique weapons in this? Or is it going to be a thing where there's some King's Sword of Haste set of modifiers that's way more desirable than anything else and pretty hard to come by?

I was moderately interested in this game until I stopped in Best Buy to get Brutal Legend and I got talked up about it.

Thank god my stupid impression that it was a monthly MMO is apparently wrong. Between 87 Bazillion Guns and that bit of information, I'm erect to mis-quote Mad Max and blow the heads off post-apocalyptic freaks.

I just can't get interested in these types of games (including Diablo) without a character-creation aspect. Phantasy Star Online is pretty much the only game like this that I was able to get into; and that had a pretty decent character creation system.

FPS action combined with Diablo-style loot? Christ they should have just called this game "Too Late, You're Addicted!"

Hellgate may have had its share of faults, but it was this combination that had me playing... Marksman?... nonstop for a week or two.
