Infinity Ward: Activision Wanted More World War II, 'Did Not Want Modern Warfare'
by Nick Breckon, Oct 07, 2009 1:01am PDTWhile the decision to branch off from World War II PC shooters and create the Modern Warfare franchise seems a no-brainer in hindsight, developer Infinity Ward now says that its owner Activision was against the idea from the start, deeming the idea "risky" and requesting more games set in the 1940s.
"With Call of Duty 2, we were dead set against it being World War 2," said Infinity Ward chief Vince Zampella to Official PlayStation Magazine, according to CVG.
"But Activision really wanted it, the compromise sort of being that we'd get some dev kits for consoles in exchange for doing a World War 2 game," he said. "We always wanted to be on consoles and Activision saw us as more of a PC developer."
"And something I'll add to that, Activision also did not want Modern Warfare. They thought working on a modern game was risky and [thought], 'oh my god you can't do that, it's crazy!' They were doing market research to show us we were wrong the whole time."
"We had to fight for everything," added Infinity Ward's Jason West. "They wanted it to be World War 2. Again."

Now I agree that having some previous experience relevant to your field is important - Apple was run for a number of years by a guy who previously ran Pepsi and it nearly killed them - but just because someone doesn't go to school to do the exact thing in the exact field they wind up getting a job in doesn't mean that they suck or that they're evil.
The fact that GH5 outsold RB:TB five to one and that it's always outsold the Rock Band franchise, and that people lined up for COD5 despite it being just another WW2 rehash, and that no matter what the next WoW expansion is going to sell shit tons, means these guys do seem to know what they're doing.
