First Fable 2 Episode Released as Free Download

Having previously revealed plans to re-release Fable II in episodic form, developer Lionhead and publisher Microsoft today put the first episode on Xbox Live.

The episodic approach sees the action-RPG split into five parts, with the first episode available for free. The downloadable and disc-based editions offer identical functionality, including saved game compatibility, multiplayer and downloadable content support.

No word yet as to when the other four episodes will hit, or how much they'll run. Update: Destructoid reports that players who reach the end of an episode will be prompted in-game to purchase and download the next at 800 Microsoft Points ($10) a pop.

For anyone who hasn't played Fable 2 yet, do yourself a favor and try it. It's not the "zomg best game evarr!!" but I found it highly enjoyable and could tell the dev team put a lot of love into it. Worth trying, definitely, even if it isn't your cup of tea.

I had issues with Fable II. The choice system was artificial, the story all over the place at best, and the main quest line is short. But I played the game for almost 40 hours, and that's due to the fun I had exploring and tackling side quests. Fable II's world is fun to explore; other than Zelda games, I've never had more fun going off the beaten path just to see what was around a bend or over the crest of a hill.
