Morning Discussion

This Tuesday is officially brought to you by the title 'Millennium,' the number 17, the colour teal, the stinging insult of a ruddy-faced fool, size 6 shoes, the scent of stoat, the sound of titanium on mahogany, the laughter of males aged 13-18, Crisco, and the faint memory of an aunt who... but no wasn't that Ian?

Please bear these sponsors in mind as you go about your regular Tuedicular activities.

    HoN

I want to share with you a pro tip I picked up over the ages. Please take note of this:

If your tower is being pushed by creeps - ATTACK THE FUCKING BALLISTA FIRST. Part of me dies whenever I see a tower is being pummeled, someone runs up to 'help' and attacks all of the melee/ranged creeps who are not even focused on the tower at this point BECAUSE THEY CHANGE TO TARGET YOU while the siege weapons merrily destroy the tower.

While I think this is good advice, I don't think it's always the best choice.

If your hero has some sort of aoe available (runed axe, shaman's heal, pyro, magmus's... thing) then it might be better to kill all the creeps quickly and let the tower switch to the ballista/catapult itself.

      • reply
        September 22, 2009 7:30 AM

this it the best choice. The tower does a ton of damage to the ballista/catapult, so if you can get the fluff (creeps) out of the way then do it. I usually wait to kill these until the ballista/catapult gets the tower below 10%, then destroy everything and finish off teh tower myself.

I should have clarified, this is mostly the people who run up and start taking out each creep one by one. If you can aoe the entire wave in one hit then yes that's fine

lol i'm the best at shacknews, its official. everyone can stop playing now. played a game with lak/flam/plat/kgargs last night. after i got 3 kills by the third minute mark flammable and lakren pretty much gave up and started trying to see how many dragons they could get to spawn in the legion supercreep camp. I think at one point they had it around 30 or so.

I ended the game at 28-0 because three of their players were new to HoN and really bad. They'll never forget that scout. It's enjoyable having wingbow and doombringer by twenty minutes.

would actually take a little while since the dragons move and might not be all on top of one another, so he'd have to do them in batches where his aoe would hit them.

Lakren had puppet master and made pretty handy work of them until he lost the fight and died.

I think the old dota time crew are pretty bored with HoN - they talk about APEM only and quad laning and all this stuff....it's too bad because although I appreciate their nagron faces I want to play straight laced SD, RD, and AR games seriously. When it comes to donkin' I guess I want to be super serious I dunno, but seems like less and less to play with lately which sucks.

This isn't a drama implied post kgargs, don't over analyze it. I mean holy shit dude I don't hold anything against dota time peeps ok? I'm just saying that it's a bummer when I'm on playing around 9-12pm EST, it's far less of the usual nagrons on that I enjoy playing with up for playing. That's it. If that's dramatic then I guess I'm Tom Cruise.

I think that you guys play earlier in the day but I'm never on around then so I don't see it. k?

They need to add more heroes. I played AR games exclusively in DoTA with a team of 5 that I'd been playing with for years and it was a lot of fun. But I'm getting tired of SD and RD games with the few # of heroes available in HoN

this is why i'm going to just play AP from now on. The hero selection in RD is beyond repetitive to me, I never liked RD in DOTA anyways. CM might be worthwhile, but until thats in i'm playing AP.

It's getting slowly better...I mean, the last patch was a monster I thought. 51 heroes in now which isn't bad at all. IMO they need to get matchmaking in next and they're doing just that. With it comes the Spectre and Panda heroes should be coming along with it which will be great.

Are you retarded? How could you possibly lose a 3v3 with two lane pushers like Arachna and Slither.

And the fewer number of players only serve to amplify the ults of Arachna and Swiftblade because 1v1s and 2v1s are far more common.

Not to mention that we had zero disables.

I knew we were gonna lose from "Let's Get It On"

At least I left that match with a > 2:1 KDR

arachna isn't really a lane pusher as much as a hero killer. Slither can push okay with wards, but he's better as a lane defender since pushing you lose the effectiveness of all the wards you placed.

Defiler and Soul Reaper are true lane pushers, Tempest too probably.

Fair enough. I guess I just really mean that when you pit Arachna, Slither, and Swiftblade (team A) against Night Hound, Devourer and Nymphora (team B) in a 3v3, the outcome is pretty predictable.

In 3v3 fights, team B has no inherent disables. As far as AOE silences go, Night Hound's is probably the worst. So, best case scenario, team B silences team A for a second or two, maybe one of Nymphora's pods goes off, and Devourer gets a grab/devour.

Meanwhile, team A has dropped a spiderling on somebody, and swift slashes on everyone. All of team B has and DoT damage and a slow from slither.

All other scenarios heavily favor Team A (2v2, 2v1, etc). The constant "fear" of Arachna and Swift's ults made tower pushing very risky, because as soon as you retreat you're dead.

Given teams of equal skill, I'm not sure team B can win.

i could be totally wrong =/

actually you are really wrong. player skill makes a big difference, because team B has everything they need. Granted this requires Devourer to be anything but horrible, and sadly 85% of people who play devourer are horrible with him.

Devourer tanks and can grab/catch/disable. If he hook/rot/ults someone it will very nearly kill any of their three heroes except if arachna pops her magic resistance skill in time. Add on top of that a heal/nuke that can be easily dropped during devourer ult and a aoe stun and aoe silence.. If team B lost then they were fucking bad or waited WAYYY too long to try to push and make something of their game. Nymphora was not the best choice, but she works well enough to support the team. It really should have jsut been devourer running around trying to gank while night hound finished them off or chased them for the kill.

If they waited too long eventually the agi team will be farmed enough to carry through. Team B really effed it up if they lost.

I was night hound on team B. And devourer (i forget who it was - joquers I think) didn't do any of that stuff you mentioned.

We didn't have good coordinated tower pushes either, but with the range of Slither and Arachna, both lanes were on the defense nearly from the get go and it then it pretty much just stayed like that until the end.

So I'll revise my previous statement. Given players of equal and poor skill on both ends, team A wins.

yeah given your revised statement team A wins because the heroes require less skill. Moderate-skill players and team B should rape face. Even with poor players and just a good devourer team B should slaughter team A.

Devourer is a very difficult hero to play properly, I'd say top 3 hardest.

Played correctly though he makes an INCREDIBLE difference.

The hook has too long of a delay i think - and if there's a friendly or creep's hitbox that's just barely in the line of fire then you get a misfire. I'm not sure what the thinking is except to make it an ultra-skill play, instead of just making it a grab selected hero and TP him back to devourer.

New money/visual exploit out in the wild. Nymphora (or could be any hero) having a ring of sorcery at lvl 1.

Played match last night Ar and Nymphora had a fucking ring at lvl 1. No possible way, must be some item/recipe you can buy that gives back more gold or something.

I took screenshots and she had 351 mana at lvl 2. When i ran practice mode that matched up as well 351mana. (ring would give her more manapool) So i dont know if the ring she has is giving the mana or just the click ability. Could be a graphical, model swap, but my teammates could see it too.

I sent a sm to idejder about hopefully next update gives replays, but i bet each version breaks replays ala war3 maybe..

TLDR; possibly money exploit or model swapping.

the recipe shows up as the ring inventory, even if it's not assembled.

it shows as a recipe in YOUR inventory, but in another player's inventory it shows as the item.

Wait, wouldn't nymph have that much mana natively at level 2? She has a base intelligence of 25 which is really high and a +int gain of 2.7 a level. At 13 points of mana per intel point that's about right

yes mana matched up, so maybe she just had recipe, but I just would think you would buy the ring 175 before the recipe

or do the exact opposite and let the ballista get the tower in deny range (and then deny it) so that the other team doesn't just roll it when the next wave comes around

Dude are you and Psigun still on for a NWN2 party? I downloaded the game last night..apparently D2Drive took the sale down for 5 bucks so I'm glad I got it when I did. We still need, what, a 4th? Or is it 5 peeps?

I'm good with d&d hc. I want rats that can kill me. As long as I'm NOT playing a tank/fighter I'm good.

I played an awful game with him. Outside of team battles, I have a hard time seeing his usefulness. he's good at pushing lanes and his aura is a DoT but he's 100% gankbait otherwise.

So don't choose him if your teammates are garbage and you need a decent int hero to bolster the lineup. Pyromancer might have given us a chance to win, SR, no shot at all.

Force pushes with your team then??

            Play to the hero's strengths...

The most common play style is to solo and rush sacrificial stone. After you get a charge, just perma push with the entire team.

Anyone else playing Kraken again? OMFG talk about rapage now. He isnt a hero killer on a crazy level but his active aoe does a shitton of damage early game againt int/agi heroes. His Omniknight aoe sloe is great midgame when it has leveld up. i only need to be able to truly work his ult a bit better and I think he will be the greatest "WTF1? Happened that last team fight" hero in the game.

The best is when the other team is pushing hard and you rush in with Ult up. They start to fight you, and maybe even stun you, but it doesnt stop the ult. Now 2 of them are pulled to where the rest of the team waits behind the attach tower. That's like insta-death. Only question is should he get portal key?
