Square CEO Predicts New Nintendo Console by 2011

18
Yoichi Wada, chief executive of Square Enix, now expects that Nintendo will release a new console in 2011.

In speaking with the Financial Times, Wada said that the console will likely be on par with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in terms of functionality, and may pack in a different controller than the Wii remote.

Though Wada thinks that motion controllers have become a standard, he's not convinced they will become key to console sales, in part because of how difficult it is to develop fun games for the peripherals.

"Present game machines already have a lot of functions: they are a network terminal, a Blu-ray or DVD player, and a gaming machine," he said. "Compared to these three pillars, the [new motion] controllers are quite limited, so the impact may be small. They are an extension of the gaming function."

Squaresoft's games have a history of only needing two buttons and a d-pad, which the Wiimote provides. Are they finally fantasizing on needing more?

The Wii doesn't have much of a video chipset. It's what Nintendo's offerings have been missing for years.

what do you mean, the gamecube was more powerful then a ps2. Nintendo has never been behind graphically until this gen.

Are you kidding? The N64 was shit, yes the cube was good, but the Wii is a freeking joke.

N practice is a joke as of far, go cheap and sell to the masses that do not know any better, in term profits go up.

Are you kidding? The previous post is exactly right. The N64 stomped all over the PS1 graphically, given though it was released later. And as already established, the Gamecube was the middle man graphically in the last generation.

More accurately, it stomped over the PSX in terms of tech specs. I don't think there was ever an N64 game that looked as good as say, Vagrant Story.

^this. I believe we're on to something here. I haven't been 100% satisfied with a nintendo console since the SNES. Since we've had the virtual boy... one color, the n64, rich 3d worlds with a rendering device to truly take advantage of them!... woops 128meg(?) cartridges. Well i guess the cube could have been great if it had the titles.

I appreciated the N64's graphics better because to me, it seemed Sony never heard of anti-aliasing until the PS3. The PSX and PS2, although looking great for their time, bombed in the AA department compared to other systems. So the details may have been there on the PSX (as opposed to more solid colors on the N64), the extreme jaggedy-ness of it all make it look a lot worse IMO.

the gamecube was great, it had a greater number of games ranked AWESOME by me than the PS2 or the XBox

N64 graphics have aged far better than PSX graphics which are always a mess of jaggies and "let's try to look realistic oh wait it's the 90s" models.

"let's try to look realistic oh wait it's the 90s" I love this line, probably because it's true.

I can think of at least 100.

PSX visuals, fmv aside, were so far behind the 64's i don't even see an debate over it.

I agree. Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and Gran Turismo were some pretty great looking games back then. I also remember that graphics were the rage ... we all wanted the best and if you all remember correctly ... the Playstation was the dominate console. Judging by the info I will provide you below it seems the majority felt the same.

                PlayStation – 102.49 million shipped
                Nintendo 64 – 32.93 million shipped
Sega Saturn – 9.5 million shipped

                  You're an absolute moron.

                  Dreamcast - 10.6 million sold.

And dreamcast OWNED the N64 in its specifications. What moron compares graphics with sales?

The worst thing about games nowadays is fucktards thinking graphics = gameplay. If companies spent less time on graphics and appealing to the mass market maybe they'd stop churning out the shit we have to settle with nowadays.

Tech specs are what matter when we're talking about the console itself. If you preferred the look of Vagrant story that's fine but it also seems irrelevant. I mean this isn't 360 vs PS3 here, the difference was pretty big.
