Rock Band Beatles Sales Top Expectations, But Not Guitar Hero

Sales of The Beatles: Rock Band are exceeding company expectations, but early indicators show Guitar Hero 5 beating the game in overall retail competition.

"Sales have exceeded our internal projections and we've sold 25 per cent of our inventory in the first week," said Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman at New York's Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference, according to Gamasutra. Meanwhile, Guitar Hero division head Dan Rosensweig claims that Activision's Guitar Hero 5 is currently outselling The Beatles four-to-one in US retail stores. The UK weekly sales chart shows that Guitar Hero 5 captured first place in its debut, with The Beatles only reaching the fourth slot on the chart.

"[The Beatles: Rock Band] did not affect our sales," said Rosensweig to the Financial Times.

I don't know anyone who is still buying GH games. I know four or five people with RB, but I only know one person with GH4 and I don't know anyone who is planning on buying GH5. Are any of you buying GH5?

I've got to assume it's all younger kids who don't know anything about good games/good music. I don't know anyone who had any interest in any of the recent GH games, but I don't keep company with many 14 year olds, either.

I bought it because I wanted a GH controller for the Beatles, and figured I may as well get the game with it.

My cousin and I went half/half for the GH:VH deal so it's a 2-for-1 deal makes sense. He's a fan of RB but buys the GH games as well.

GH games are mass-marketed a lot better. I mean, dancing pants-less supermodels? The Beatles are awesome, but even their amazing Abbey Road-inspired TV ad can't compete with pants-less supermodels.

Also, partially because of the advertising, I bet GH is bought as a gift for other people way more often than TB:RB would be.

Fuck Rock Band. It may be a better game but they'll never get my money after their PAL release bullshit.

I rented it, and I think it's far inferior in just about every technical aspect...but it's got a broader appeal to the "gamer" crowd, in that most of us are probably around the age that these bands are bands we either grew up with, or love now. The Beatles, while popular still, aren't a band most of us would have grown up with unless our parents were huge fans.

After Rock Band 2 and GH: Metallica, I'm pretty much good.

I did buy a copy of Beatles RB though since my wife was freaking for it.

I had Rock Band when it first came out in the UK.. I remember paying £180 (around about $295) and after the initial excitement of hitting some plastic drums, I suddenly remembered how much it had cost me and was not impressed so much after all. Not bothered with another Rock Band game, especially The Beatles. It doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, I have GH:Metallica though. Which is great fun
