Dark Forces Pack Hitting Steam, D2D on Wednesday

LucasArts' catalog of Dark Forces/Jedi Knight action titles will be available to buy on Steam and Direct2Drive starting this Wednesday, the company has confirmed.

The lineup will include all of the titles associated with the franchise, including the Jedi Knight expansion pack Mysteries of the Sith and the original Dark Forces. No word on pricing yet--check back on Wednesday for the full rundown.

I own all of these games, but will re-buy because:

1. Jedi Knight and MOTS use 16 bit installers which don't work on Vista.
2. I appreciate the fact that LucasArts is releasing these.

I spent more hours than I want to remember using cheats to spawn an army of varied-level dark jedi in convenient 'arena-like' parts of the levels and fighting for my life.

Such fun. Never played such a good sword combat system before or since.

I own multiple copies of these, and they are all incredibly rewarding except for Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast blasters, which featured inexplicably slow laser shots from the weapons, combined with otherwise solid gameplay. Dark Forces and JK/JK MOTS are two of the greatest games of all time.

I have to admit I only enjoyed the original Dark Forces. It was a really an amazing game for that time. The sequels bored me for some reason. JK's 3D characters looked bad and the levels felt bigger but emptier. JK2 felt more like some ordinary shooter. It only improved once you got the light saber. I guess the original game had a much more involving storyline and was very innovative which can't be said for the sequels, IMHO.

The original Dark Forces was really, really cool.

I always felt that the game could easily be remade in this generation as a stealth action title. Kyle Katarn, double agent, sneaking around Imperial installations sabotaging production, stealing the original Death Star plans, taking on Boba Fett, etc.
