Cobain's Guitar Hero Cameo Brings Legal Threat; 'Activision Smugly Boasting of Rape,' Says Love
by Chris Faylor, Sep 10, 2009 8:03am PDTMusician Courtney Love has launched a strongly worded and rather vulgar campaign against the use of her deceased husband's likeness in Guitar Hero 5, claiming that she is "going to sue the shit out of [Activision]" over Kurt Cobain's in-game appearance.
A digital rendition of the Nirvana frontman performs "Smells Like Teen Spirit" during the game's career mode, after which players can use his likeness to perform any in-game song (such as "Play That Funky Music") in any capacity (drums, guitar, vocals).
Love says she "never signed [off] on the avatar" and adds "I think Kurt would despise this game alone let alone this avatar." Activision previously told Rolling Stone that it had gotten approval from Love, Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl and Primary Wave Publishing to use two Nirvana tunes and Cobain's likeness in the game.
"Courtney supplied us with photos and videos and knew exactly what she wanted Kurt to look like," the company explained. "She picked the wardrobe and hair style, which turned out to be the 'Teen Spirit' look, then we went back and forth over changes."
Cobain's not the only real-life rock star to appear in the game. Digitized versions of Johnny Cash, Carlos Santana, Matt Bellamy (Muse) and Shirley Manson (Garbage) are also featured, and can also be used in any song and in any capacity once unlocked.
A summary of Love's tirade, culled from hundreds of near-incomprehensible Twitter updates, can be found below. Be warned, however, of some strong language.

2) Kurt Cobain was too cool for the room in a new and exciting way, circa 1992, but that time is past. It was cool to hate conformity and disdain sellouts, but the novelty wore off quickly with acts like Rage Against the Machine screaming about corporate-military-government evils while cashing huge checks from, um, corporations. I heard one guy sum it up perfectly "Hey, we're all millionaires FUCK THE GOVERNMENT!!!!"
Kurt Cobain would hate Rock Band? Sure he would. He'd also quietly sign a deal to get his music on there, and then post on his "indy-sponsored" blog that he was totally against it and how bad it sucked. Then he'd buy another sports car with the money he was paid. Don't believe it? He signed a record deal, didn't he? Went on MTV? His interviews always showed a real disgust in the "system", but his business deals showed a love for it. It was an act.
The whole "I participate in the filthy conformist capitalist system, but I hold my nose when I cash the checks" thing is so over.

I am skipping your second point; it is either wilful ignorance of the dissonance or just painfully awkward justification. I can't be sure which.
On the third point, turning it around as you try here... no, sorry. You tried to make it seem like you didn't have a lot invested. Now you're indicting me for staying in the argument. I guess in your way you're agreeing that you were faking detachment. You're shaking apart a bit here, I think.
On your final point: Picking apart an argument, and then refusing to acknowledge when your weak points have been systematically refuted, is just obstinance, and not a successful debate technique.
I think perhaps I can tack down why you feel you might be holding up this argument, but in truth are not. Do you remember when you said that if it weren't for some utility you wouldn't have bothered to even look at this post again? Well, on the very next post you tell me you have all day and are paying close attention. You don't just unsuccessfully contradict me; you handily contradict yourself.
