Morning Discussion: Post-It From America

My American adventure is drawing to a close and I must say I'm going to miss you, young man. You're the progeny I shall never understand but you're alright in my book. We should see more of each other.

Having received a dose of the Virginia suburb experience, I would rather like to take similar jaunts to other parts of your mahoosive and diverse land. Downtown Salt Lake City, a tiny apartment in San Francisco, a bungalow in a one-stoplight Minnesota town, out in the New Mexico sticks... not chasing sights and attractions but simply enjoying a snifter of life. Take care, have fun, be good and don't be a stranger.

    I'm starting a semester long advanced photojournalism documentary project on chefs in my college town trying to make it. It's been fantastic for just the first week, and I've been on full bore calling places, getting times and spots. I actually enjoy the intensity of being slammed into the corner of a busy kitchen, and a surprising number of places let me do it.

    But my biggest issue is my technique and camera. I tried a session with a flash, bouncing it off the ceiling, and the class was extremely dismissive of how washed out and abrasive it made all the photos. However, I have one of the lowest end digitals in the class, my xsi 450D, and there's no way in hell I'd get anything without the flash on a reasonable printable ISO setting in dark kitchens. This is why I posted that "I want to get a better camera, what should I do?" post earlier.

    So I think I'm going to do it. It's either the 40D, 50D, or wait until the end of the month for the 7D. the 5D is pretty iffy since I already own a very nice 17-55mm 2.8 EF-S lens that is reviewed as being as good as L glass optically. I've also wanted to sell my old camera and upgrade because I can't stand the manual controls on the XSi.

    I'll post some photos for ya'll once I get a little further in so the shack can help critique. But I was wondering if anyone knows how much of a noise and ISO jump the xsi->40D would be. Canon claims the 7D will be far better for that as well, but I'm not big on waiting until the end of the month.

    So I gotta retype my epic love/hate relationship with Civ4+BTS.

    After the speech and internetting with you totally awesome folks, I knew I needed some booze and some video games. BUT WHAT? The halos were getting to be an eyesore in TF2, I dorked around in BF2 and 2142 for a while, smacked myself in the face for not having Batman yet... so in further punishment I went to Civ4.

    I've lost many games by stupidly switching to a different victory condition due to being constantly invaded by multiple people.

    Yet this time, the MIGHTY DUTCH EMPIRE had a sweeping cultural victory, and I got the highest score I've ever thrown down... over 9000!!!! hehe. actually over 10,000 !!!! I won in an epic fashion, finally. So I had to do the "one more turn" stuff with culture still cranked to max... and roughly every 10 turns a city was annexed into my empire. I had probably 5 more totally surrounded and it was only a matter of time. Pretty funny stuff.
