Morning Discussion: Labor Day Edition
by Alice O'Connor, Sep 07, 2009 8:08am PDTRejoice, America, for today is the federal holiday of 'Labor Day' and we have no work to do. Having never experienced a Labour Day before, I can only assume that today is the day America makes amends for its dreadful working hours, stingy vacation time, awful health care and shameful reliance upon tipping in many jobs.
As such, the celebration must surely involve flying around on rocketbooted giraffes, watching Laurel & Hardy on an HDTV screen embedded in its neck, receiving telephone calls of praise from every boss you have ever had, eating barbecue until a cascade of sauce flows down your chin, over your chest and trickling through your toes onto its patchwork fur, then returning to a ticker-tape parade hosted by Dick Clark. I can't wait!

I just found out I'm going to be working the overnight shift at work for a few months until someone new is trained up. As overnight is mostly sitting around waiting for something to break, I'd like some TV shows to watch. I've actually seen a lot of good shows due to me discovering a few years ago that TV doesn't suck anymore, but I'm looking for more.
Some of my favorite shows would be Deadwood, BSG, and The Shield.

While I disrespectfully disagree, both of the Half-Lifes raised the bar for gaming at the time it was released, with fantastic gameplay and interactive cutscenes and great scripted events (the first ones? help me roushimsx and RomSteady) and enemy AI. Duke3D (yes, I am biased) did that before those with interactivity. Before that, what, Wolfenstein? After H-L2, what, Portal for gameplay mechanics?
Should there be a definitive list of games that raised bars and set new standards? It would start with Pong, right, and then what was the first game in true color, not just the plastic screen overlay that some arcade games had? Was Donkey Kong the first platformer? Was Unreal the first game with impressive water and beautiful outdoor environments? Is SoF the first game with realistic violence? Did Bioshock raise the standard for art direction? What was the first game to offer deathmatch?
I expect disagreement over some of my examples and expect to be torn apart for some of them and that is OK, that is how I learn and that can make for an interesting thread.

*I'm not to sure about the ram (does it work with that mobo, says its DDR31600, should I be looking for like DDR3 2000+ or something?).
**Secondly, I know there are some lower end mobo's for the i5's but I can't seem to find them on new egg, all these preliminary reviews are saying you can get a p55 mobo for 100$; that gigabyte P55-UD4P is 170$, sort of pricey considering im trying to stay as far below 700$ as possible, and I don't need all the extra dongles like tons of USB ports, digital audio out crossfire/SLI support etc. I'm looking for something closer to ~100$ for a mobo but I can't seem to find any. Any help with this would be appreciated.
I'm also not really planning on overlocking for now, so im thinking of sticking with the stock heatsink, but i would be willing to shell out like 40-50$ on a new heatsink, however, I can't seem to find those either anywhere on newegg. Am I missing something or are they simply not available?
And finally, I'm pulling the vid card/power supply/harddrives/dvd drives etc out of my old machine that the mobo died in, so its sorta gonna be a Frankenstein machine.

So my sister moved back into the house (yes I'm sad and still live at home), and with her brought her two cats. I'm allergic to cats, but the little fuckers are so damned cute. They're named Blackie and Stripey, and I bet you can guess why. Now despite my allergies, I started to pet the shit out of them when they started to test their new territory and leave from under my sister's dresser. And now, any time they see me, they follow me all over the house. They meow like I'm an asshole when I stop, and I can't sit anywhere without one jumping on my lap. In this computer room I have to close the door just for some sanctity. But even then, Stripey just sits outside the door and reaches her paw underneath every couple minutes or so. It's damned cute but shit. I thought these were self-sufficient pets that didn't need to be showered with affection.

Was the electricity boss (almost a clone of the airship boss) just after Alma in the original game, or is he new in Sigma? I think I remember reading that he is new. If so, I dislike him. I'm not expecially impressed by the added-for-Sigma stuff because it seems so out of balance and awkward compared to the original stuff.
PS yes, patience was the key to defeating Alma. I still want to beat her again without drinking all five of my potions... the problem is her attacks are so damn strong and my life bar is so damn long that it takes that many just to refill!

Is now a good time to upgrade video cards? I vaguely remember hearing about something coming out. I want to throw my 4870 in the trash after dealing with ATI driver problems for the past few months.
