Star Trek Online Beta Signups Open

With the targeted "by March 31, 2010" launch of Star Trek Online looming, developer Cryptic today began taking applications for a closed beta test later this year. Outside of those who have guaranteed beta access because they bought a six-month or lifetime subscription to Cryptic's just-launched superhero MMO Champions Online, participants for the Star Trek Online beta will be randomly selected.

In an accompanying press release, executive producer Craig Zinkievich said "closed beta registration is an important step in bringing Star Trek Online to the public," with the studio also billing STO as "the first MMO to offer both space and ground game play."

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

Star Wars Galaxies had space and ground game play. And after Champions Online I'm not holding my breathe for this game to be good.

        No?

        No... not at all.

Are you saying it's not good, not not good, or not not not good?

I only played in the CO beta, but it was one of the best character generators ever tied to a cluster fuck of suck of a game.

And the character generator is really not that much better than the one already existing in CoX.

It's pretty raw. I have a fairly nice system and have performance issues, like sub 30fps in some zones.
I tried turning things way down and got like a 3 FPS difference, so it's definitely the client. Weird artifacts, like water and smoke showing through solid structures.

Also, ranged combat seems just kinda off to me for some reason. Almost like server side lag but only enough to just be barely noticeable. The way they did the classless system and stats just seems unnecessarily complicated and non-intuitive, this coming from someone who has been playing MMOs since M59 and MUDs before that. It's a retail beta ATM.

They probably exclude SWG from their minds when they made the statement because it space combat was added in an expansion (even if that expansion is available to all now)

Maybe not, but I assume that's it...
