Nvidia-branded Version of Stardock's Impulse Will Auto-Install Graphics Drivers

49
Stardock today announced that a new "Nvidia Edition" version of its PC digital download platform Impulse is set to be released later this summer.

The application will function just as Stardock's current incarnation of Impulse does, but will also automatically detect and install driver updates for Nvidia graphics cards.

"The single biggest issue preventing PC gamers today from having an optimal experience is a failure to update their video card drivers," said Stardock CEO Brad Wardell.

Continued Wardell: "For many users, updating video drivers has been a complicated and sometimes confusing experience. As PC game developers ourselves, we recognized those concerns and, in partnership with Nvidia, have taken a step to make the process more accessible."

I have never. Ever. Had a problem figuring out where to go/how to update my video drivers. Ever.

You are not the average user.

The average user has a good chance of not knowing what a driver is (as it relates to a computer).

Pretty much. It's very easy to overestimate the "average user". Those are the guys who can barely change batteries in a TV remote.

Windows Update automatically detects and downloads new NVIDIA drivers. Although I never let it do that, because I like installing my own drivers by my self, I just feel better that way.

I'm not sure it's that simple. In my experience, Microsoft Update on the PC only downloads and installs essential security fixes and updates to core programs like IE and the .NET framework. You have to actually go to the Microsoft Update website, find and select the NVIDIA drivers to install them.

It provides driver updates along with other updates, at least in the Vista version of Windows Update. Although, like Marrbe, I tend to get my drivers directly from NVidia instead.

Yeah. The average users I encounter doing the desktop side of my job will not update something if it requires you to say 'Yes' to a dialog that pops up.

If a video card driver works, then it's good enough for the average user and doesn't need to be updated. Automatically updating it if they don't have issues just means one of their apps might suddenly stop working with no explanation about what changed. This really shouldn't be inflicted on an average user. I think this is more for lazy power users, but even then, the NVIDIA Control Panel already has an automatic update function.

Good point... There was an nvidia update a year or so ago that broke Remote Desktop. I didn't realize it immediately because it was a few days after the update that I first tried connecting to my machine. It took them 2 or 3 updates to get that problem sorted out.

Fortunately it doesn't sound like they're putting this auto-update nvidia thing in the standard client, so it'll only happen to people who are (hopefully) paying attention.

You must be new to computers.

Back in the 9x days, updating video drivers was an "interesting" endeavor. Granted, it's significantly easier now, but still something the average user doesn't do.

You should contact Stardock and Nvidia and inform them to please be sure to specifically exclude unholydonuts from any further public statements they may make on this topic.
