Duke4 Information?

by Steve Gibson, Apr 19, 2000 3:52pm PDT

George Broussard has a .plan update talking about the lack of Duke4 information being released. In fact we've got more information about the lack of information than we have actual information about the game. Thats not a lot of information. The .plan also says that the next game they have wont even be announced until it gets close to release.

I think we can all recall the old Doom days, or Duke 3D, where a game came virtually out of nowhere and blew you away. You didn't have a list of all the locations, items, weapons and monsters. You just loaded it and went "Wow". We are returning to those days long past.
That being said, the Duke4 screenshots that are currently released are probably the only shots we're gonna be seeing of the game for a long while. You can also check out the interview with George Broussard conducted here recently.

  • I have always deemed myself someone who plays with honour by the way

    dont kill people talking
dont shoot complete newbies with an mp5 explosive... play with them - shoot at their legs - kill them slowly give them a small chance (occasionally i get rolled by this and they actuall kill me, but good on them)

dont steal peoples frags, if someone is shooting someone (weakening him) dont shoot the person he is attacking and steal his frag, attack hte attacker- then kill off the one he has weakened for you - giving him a chance...

dont know - i find it more fun to have some respect for my enemies

  • Ok let me re-phrase my comment

The gauss *CAN* be a noskills weapon (ok medium skills) and pepole dominate by going nuts through walls

and hardcore people who learn it well, - good on you - but for fucks sake... do we have to have a game dominated by one gun? i cursed quake1 for years cause it was primarily rocket rocket rocket ... half life is a wicked game with alot of medium skilled players, but put one hardcore guy on there with the gauss it takes the fun away

i'm happy to be killed by someone over and over due to skill in the game, but just learning one gun i just .. i dont know i just hate it - always have .. same with the plasma in doom2 map 1 ..... sure plasma isnt the ultimate gun, but when you die 20 times and EVERY death is via the plasma it gets shitty

i always kill with variety infact anyone who plays doom 2 plasma only in my opinion has no "gaming honour" (although most of the top players probably dont) - but on a public server i play for fun, not to just get the most frags possible in X time - i'm happy to stop caning if i'm 20 frags ahead and play around with the snarks, or det packs until someone comes closer - then go back up again with the mp5, it just blows when someone HAS to literally get as many kills possible in the 15 / 20 minute time limit as if they have a record to beat.... annoying.

    (guess i hate loosing huh?)
either way gauss through walls is at least 20% too strong in MY opinion.. shrug

  • A gaming community doesn't have to be built before a game is released. Sometimes that's a good thing.

Take Halo for example. They're already forming "clans" for fucks sake. I mean, it's okay to be excited about a future kickass game and all, but they're setting themselves up for a big, "Oh. That's what I thought it was going to be."

I remember Doom coming out of nowhere and shitting my pants. There probably won't be another hugely ground breaking game released like Doom though... but I'd like to be proven wrong. Shock me! Raise the bar! Don't let the cat out of the bag! Do it without pulling a Romero! :)

  • Yeah, wow. My only request 3DR is that you let us know what the hardware requirements are probably going to be for your next one...

As far as how things have changed since Duke 3 and Doom - heh, the net wasn't really up and running like it is now when those games came out. People were still running BBS's and I felt like a king with my 14.4 modem, 486 DX2 66 with 12 megs of ram (it was $150+ for a 4 meg SIMM). The web has taken the gaming industry and made it a community, and I wonder what will happen to the community when news disappears.

  • Check this:
"It's great fun to play in one-player with a lot of depth to the gameplay and the multiplayer is good enough to keep you going even after you've completed the single-player mode - which incidentally isn't very easy to do! If you like your action first-person then go out and get yourself a copy of Daikatana. If you've stayed clear of games like this up till now because you've always felt that they were a bit mindless, then now's your chance to get your hands on a seriously enjoyable shoot-'em-up which requires more than just a little bit of thought to play. What are you waiting for? Get down to your local software store now!"
/me thinks they pulled this guy out of a cave, showed him the "wonders" of the N64, and hadhim write a review.
