Microsoft: Xbox 360 Failures 'Well Behind Us'
by Nick Breckon, Aug 27, 2009 7:02pm PDTFollowing years of Xbox 360 failures and several warranty extensions, Microsoft director of product management Aaron Greenberg is confident that the issues plaguing owners of the console are largely over.
"I can tell you the consoles we're making today have lower-heat chips and better cooling, and we're seeing fantastic quality in those consoles today," said Greenberg to GameSpot. "That said, I know people have had issues with systems, which were bought earlier in the life cycle, and that's part of the reason why we implemented our unprecedented three-year warranty for anyone who gets the three red-ring flashing light error or the E74 error."
Microsoft extended the warranty on Xbox 360 launch consoles to three years in 2007, a move that cost the company $1 billion.
"I think we've made it clear we stand by the quality of our product, and we will make it right by fixing the problem at no extra cost to you," he said. "But at the same time, we've been working hard to make improvements in the products we're currently making, so I really feel like most of this is well behind us."

"I love my PS8, that RedRing shit 10 years ago just ruined it for me. (insert charlie brown teacher talk here)."
The fact of the matter is :
People were still buying the XBOX
People ARE still buying the XBOX
People WILL still buy the XBOX
People STILL think you are retarded when you bitch about the RedRing

Isnt the 'quality' of the product what has cost the company more than a billion dollars?

At least MS is standing behind their product, and taking a big loss to do so. Remember the kid that sent in his signed XBOX for repair, and when he got it back, they had cleaned it and rubbed off the signature? Microsoft went out of their way to send him a new special: http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/22/microsoft-apologizes-for-360-cleaning-with-bill-gates-signed-r/
I, for one, applaud all of their efforts in this generation. Both to the gamers and to the developers.

And years of denial; let's not forget the years of denial.
"I really feel like most of this is well behind us" sounds almost like "most of us have either quit Microsoft, moved onto other projects, or are trudging into work like zombies, trying desperately to not think about XBox 360 production quality.
Here's an idea, Microsoft: how about you stop building them like hackjob mini-PCs, cutting corners all over the place on component selection, choosing the manufacturers purely on most units per hour, and not paying attention to solder quality or hotspots? How about building a product that runs well within tolerances for weeks on end per session without stress failure?
Oh wait, you can't do that because you were paying so much attention to the short-term bottom line. Maybe next cycle you won't be so greedy.

it really does make things quiet, and I play most of my games off the hard drive.

I assume then that no one owns an older 360 that will eventually fail then, correct? Wrong. Absolute BS.
I bought a Pro in 2006. It RRoD'd, was replaced, the replacement RRoD'd, then the 3rd console I got had to be sent back because some retard at Microsoft left stickers inside of the console (which I took pictures of and sent to The Consumerist). I had to send the same console back a 4th time because they didn't remove the stickers AGAIN. My #5 system is now apparently out of warranty.
When it fails (and I'm sure it will), I will repair the thing myself. I will also install a better cooling solution. If it fails after that, I will only buy a used or refurbished system (and I don't want to do either, truthfully).
You know what, I'm sorry, I love the 360 and it's definitely the best of the 3 (and I do own all 3) but Microsoft should repair every 360 for at least ANOTHER 3 years. They act like they've done everyone a favor with the 3yr warranty, and they have - however, the system can still fail, especially all the 90nm consoles that are out there like mine.
They better nip this in the bud the next time they decide to release a console, and they better invest a lot more time and money into R&D and testing because I'm not buying another shoddy console from Microsoft.
Just a *little* optimistic there, maybe? I mean even if they have the capability to start making failure-free consoles right now, they still have that install base out there that they worked hard to put in place, and those are ALL older systems. The problem won't ever go away, in that sense.
With that said, I have a Jasper red elite, so here's hoping it'll be my last one. Of course if it DOES break I can return it to Costco and buy a new one at the lower price and get like $100 back. :D
(and I'm pretty happy with it so far. except for the PS3 slim announcement. duh.)
Forget the TOWEL trick...it causes more damage to the box,,
There is private professional XBOX 360 service here in Hungary. They can fix anything except RAM failures. They are reballing the legs of the GPU with rich plummet. 7 of 10 XBOX 360 are working perfectly after that and you dont have to use extra cooling but they can gear it up too if you want.
Most of the failures comes from the unleaded soldering wich is now the standard "green" technology for years now all around the world..
I have a dead 360 and the store I bought it from gave me 24month warranty which sadly passed already at the time the console died. Tried calling Microsoft HQ in my country and they've said they don't deal with hardware at all (console/keyboards/mouses etc.) and that the importer/distributor of those is responsible for the warranty.
Well it's dead about a year now, and I don't really care, got a 2nd one which seems to work OK. Still if I can I'd like to know if I can get it repaired/replaced in Europe.
