Update: Raven has confirmed the layoffs, issuing an official statement: "With the recent completion of both Wolverine, based on the summer blockbuster movie, and Wolfenstein, the next chapter of the famed franchise, Raven Software is slightly reducing its workforce to better reflect the studio's upcoming slate."

Original story: Shacknews has heard from multiple sources that Wolfenstein and X-Men Origins: Wolverine developer Raven Software is being hit by a round of layoffs today. The firings are said to have affected all areas of the the studio, and were not targeted at any specific team or project.

One source put the number of firings at 56 employees out of a previous total of 180 staff. Severance packages and placement support are apparently being offered to the affected staff.

Raven has had a busy year, releasing Wolfenstein last week and X-Men Origins: Wolverine in May. The studio is scheduled to ship its original shooter Singularity in March 2010.

Shacknews has contacted Raven and Activision for comment on the layoffs, but has not yet received a reply.
