PlayStation Motion Controller Slated for Spring 2010

17
Sony has revealed its expectations to the release the new PlayStation 3 Motion Control peripheral, which it claims will provide "true 1:1 tracking" and "true 3D pointing" when used in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye camera, in the spring of 2010.

"We are slating it for spring of next year," Sony executive Kazuo Hirai told Times Online when asked about the device during GamesCom last week. "One of the things is that we just don't want to put out the controller. We need a great software that supports the controller at launch. It's something that we've been working on for the longest time."

During its GamesCom press conference, Sony showed a new trailer for the device (below), and promised that more details on the specific games that will utilize the new controller will be shared at the Tokyo Game Show in September.

Rival Microsoft also plans to introduce its new motion-based controller for the Xbox 360, codenamed Project Natal, at some point in 2010, though it has yet to say exactly when.

I hear that so, so much about that console. It makes a fine dust magnet I'm told.

        Same thing happened to me.

If this move by Sony and MS's Natel force Nintendo's next consul to have high end parts and no watered down shit hardware (Wii) then that is all I care (Mission accomplished.

To tell you the truth call me old school I am more than happy with the PS3 or 360 controller they are 100% fine.

I hope I never have to live through another consul cycle where there is a system that is a anomaly with piece of shit hardware to try and jack up the progression of gaming (yes N progressed the controller sort of, depends how you look at it, the rest they went backwards).

          Yes, DualShock is the pinnacle.

SixAxis is nice and all, and it is fun if used tastefully (Ratchet and Clank comes to mind), but I'm not really behind all of this motion and camera control stuff.

Personally, I like the ergonomics of the X360 controller more and the weight is also nice. I will admit that the D-pad is a bit lacking in feel. I also like the fact that I can replace the battery, not the whole controller.

Dualshock is still nice, but I think the X360 controller except for the D-pad is better.

Give me a DualShock with 360 thumbsticks and thumbstick placement, and I will never ask for anything again in my entire life, ever.

Ding ding ding! I hope Sony and Microsoft learn a very nasty lesson from this time wasting excercise, their current customers probably couldn't give a shit about the Wii motion controls and their potential future customers who think motion controls are important, will buy a Wii.

It's interesting - there aren't many guys I know with a Wii, but there are plenty of girls I work with who have them, and loved them (well, Wii sport) until they got sick of it.

Makes me wonder: if Nintendo had a decent web-based front end presence on the Wii they could have DOMINATED the downloadable casual game market, but they kind of fucked it up, frankly - Microsoft owns in this category.

I'm pretty certain a Live style service a couple of years ago with the Wii would have seen the competition nearly dead.

I think PSN and the Live Marketplace will make the difference here though. Producing a full on AAA disc title for a cut-down userbase with untested mechanics is a terrible idea*, but theres plenty of scope for one of many smaller titles to hit just the right note and become the Next Big Thing in gamer circles, and spawn a mini-genre.

These devices need the kind of basic mechanical evolution and refinement that (for example) shooters have had over 15 years - AI using cover, scripting triggers, physics, offhand grenades, regenerating health, cover mechanics etc etc. Those won't come fast enough from games with 2/3 year production cycles.

*and producing even a cheap non-carnival-games game for wii is a terrible idea since 90% of the audience DGAF
