How far do you think this thing is going to go? I mean, since Blizzard and Activision are on the same side, could future Modern Warfare games or other Activision titles link in to battle.net? Or will bnet just be Blizzard's play ground so long as the WoW money keeps rolling in and allowing them to support services like this?

I actually haven't thought about this. I think it could be possible, especially with how much work they're putting into the service. It could be Actiblizzard's Steam / XFire / Xbox Live / PlayStation Network on the PC. But then again, if they're going to port 360 games to the PC, then Games for Windows - Live might be easier to use.

I'm thinking this is the start of their own Steam like service.

I get this feeling too, but for the near future it seems like it'll just be for Blizzard.

Battle.net can't really muscle in on console network services XBL and PSN, for one thing. It'll be on PC only.

But this could be a big blow for gamespy, who has always provided multiplayer infrastructure for their PC games, especially Call of Duty.

With Games for Windows Live, Steam, and Battle.net all on the marketplace right now, I think gamespy might be in some trouble

Blizzard is the bigger behemoth. Activision's division will be hard pressed to push it. Although I will admit that Activision may obsolesce to a point that Blizzard's administration will direct it. I doubt it will be as significant as you put it.
